The real moving force behind any story read by a newsreader is the producer.

In this case Rather realized it was a very touchy subject so he asked the Pres. of CBS News to get onboard. That kinda let him off the hook.

Mapes and the pres should fall. Rather should fall also just for being stupid for over 20 years and probably all his life but whether or not he'll fall is another matter.

I dunno but, I noticed you included the blogger's name when you posted your thread.

Maybe it's just me but, I have a hard time taking seriously anyone who chooses to call himself "Hindrocket."

Well, these are the people who can take a big part of the credit for exposing the "Rathergate" fraudulent memo, so I'll give his screen name all the credit he deserves-that's the way he posts on Powerline, so that's the way I'll credit it.

If anyone thinks CBS was a victim rather than a perp here, send me a freepmail. I have a bridge I'm willing to let go, cheap.

Your ignorance is overwhelming.

If you merely clicked the link to Powerline provided you could have read Mr. Hinderaker's rather impressive credentials for yourself.

Instead of thinking & investigating before posting you have demonstrated both laziness and ignorance.

In case you have been hiding in your cave for the past several months, FR was the first to notice the forgery, but Powerline and Hindrocket were the ones who publicized it.

What have you done for the cause lately?

You said, "CBS was making it up as they went along"

Listen Laz, I think the media, especially the elite opinion print media, writes what it wants to be true, pushing their own agenda, then credits their made up stories to unnamed sources to give it credibility. Who's to know the difference?

Lighten up, Francis. It was a joke.

I still say "Hindrocket" is a poor choice. You may have a different opinion.

At any rate, you can take your sanctimonious blather and stuff it for all I care.

I blasted a "one post and banned" troll.

I'll not be toning that down any time soon. It's fun!

Errr, Sandy Berger thing? What was that? Is that something like the rumor that Kerry was a great hero in Viet Nam? Or maybe the Broaddrick rumor? Or even Whitewater? Surely the gummint would not let those fat and juicy rumors drop into the back hole of forgetfulness, would they? (a little sarcasm here, guys)

For a astoundingly clear review of the horrendous Clintoon years, you all must read: "The meaning of IT" by the illustrious Bob Barr (regrettably no longer in Congress). It's an eye opener about how the RATs under the Felon got away with trashing the law and most everything else including the White House itself and how the Pubbies allowed it to happen through sheer idiocy and gross ineptitude.

I agree wholeheartedly, and briefly considered leaving the last line off of my reply back there. But, sheesh, the guy flew off the handle for no reason. So, maybe he caught me at one of those weak, extra-generous moments where I could easily be persuaded to give people what they're asking for.

The authenticity of the documents was very, very obvious joke. You didn't even have to match up the fonts, find flaws in the dates or other details or even question the method of receipt (Fax) although all of these were glaring red flags. What gets me is the "Expert" who somehow authenticate the signatures from a copied and faxed document.

Any person remotely familiar with computers, even Dan Rather, as stupid as he is, knows that any simple copy and paste routine could be used to paste a signature into any document and then reprint. Also, anyone would therefore know that, in the absence of an original, inked signature, it is simply IMPOSSIBLE to verify the accuracy of any signature.

The "Document Expert" they lined up also knew this but allowed himself to be used, for a hefty fee no doubt, to give Rather/CBS the "Plausible Denial" they needed before foisting the documents on the public.

The bottom line is that all of this investigation and expressions of surprise about the falsity of the documents is Plain BS. They knew they were false (Or at least that their authenticity could not be proved) and simply went forward hoping the fallout would be muted by a Kerry win.

""The fundamental question here is whether CBS was the victim of a hoax, or the perpetrator of a hoax.""

"IMO This is the real issue here. The fact that these documents were so obviously fraudulent would make CBS the perpetrator or, at the least, a co-conspirator in the promulgation of this hoax.

IMO that and....this:

""a story about how CBS coordinated its attack on President Bush with the Democratic National Committee;""

as I recall, the way this all unfolded, the Kerry campaign was aware of this beforehand.
