He undoubtedly grieves as the rest of us do and NOT A SINGLE ONE of us would wish this to happen. But it HAS happened and expressing an appreciation for the natural beauty of the beach after the fact, doesn't sound callous to me. Just realistic. Perhaps that is the point of some of killjoy's posts?

Exactly. The loss of life is horrible but it is over and there is nothing that can be done about it. What can be done is a sensible rebuilding plan to improve the area. Illegal construction on a lot of the beaches had gotten completely out of hand. Hopefully the government will not allow this to happen again.

I have been in a pretty unique position to have an almost front row seat for what has been happening in Thailand. I have been in constant communication with people on the ground in the worst hit areas, on the phone for around 3 hours a day talking to people. I have a pretty good idea of what is happening and why. I have also been on FR quite a bit lately and seen the extreme distortions and misrepresentations both in the articles posted and in the responses to them.

Many of the articles, while mostly truthful, have been completely distorted by people replying to them to meet their own agenda. A perfect example of this is Darksheare stating he used to be an 'envirowacky' and then assuming that anyone who makes a comment about the beauty of nature is one also. I have been all over Thailand and yes there are 'envirowacky' people, but they are not sitting on a beach in Phuket.

Other examples include the numerous posts about the missing 12 year old boy. Almost all the posts contain a comment that all tourists to Phuket are pedophiles going there to have sex with little boys and girls. Absolutely nothing could be further from the truth. When this is pointed out to people, as well as the extremely harsh prison sentences handed out to people for it, they refuse to believe it. It is interesting that the people pushing this view of Thailand are groups like UNICEF. Yes, the UN. I thought Freepers were against the UN... I guess not. Could it be they only disagree with the UN when it doesn't fit their own agenda?

When it finally broke that the boy wasn't kidnapped and never was at the hospital, I was attacked again by people saying that the Thai government was just trying to cover it up. The sheer lunacy is beyond me. This country is one of our best allies in the world and has done nothing but support the US including our decision to go into Iraq. This is the thanks they get? It is no wonder so many people around the world hate us.

People are a work of nature too.

These - "environmentalists" - are repulsive, arrogant selfish BASTARDS who want everything for themselves. The BASTARDS. May they suffer for their arrogance.

Pardon the insensitive and crude nature of my thoughts, but I seriously doubt the beaches were strewn with the bodies of thousands of innocent dead.

No matter that all that commercialism that was feeding so many is now gone.

Having been in the US Navy and having made port visits to Patong Beach whether you know it or not the main product bought and sold there are prostitutes along with under girls and boys for the pedophiles who frequent the place. Something that I haven't seen reported by the main stream media.

"I never in that that was the reason he went (and it most probably is not), all I was pointing out is something that has been left out of any reports from the area. The sex-tourism industry in the area had already caused a deepening of the area's economy prior to the tsunami and had brought many very poor people without a lot of resources or family support to the area to service that industry. I just gave a reason why many otherwise comfortable westerners came to the area in spite of the over development in the resort area. It was an FYI."

I knew about that (I read the papers, and watch tv), but as I was pointing out, I just thought it was a stupid statement to make about it being more like Hawaii, when he actually lived in Hawaii. But thank you for the information, even though it did not apply to the article.

One thought I've been mulling over.... who in their right mind would develop AGAIN on these same areas?

Something like this is extremely rare - it might happen on average one time in a thousand years. Undersea earthquakes sufficient to cause tsunamis in that region aren't very common at all. That being said, it could happen again tomorrow - no way to know.

There are fault lines almost everywhere though, so people in St Louis could be in danger as well.

So what you are saying is that most of the folks who went there went for underaged sex. Kinda makes the Tsunami Biblical doesnt it?

Hardly. 'underaged sex' in Thailand will get you 5 to 20 years in a Thai jail.

But not from a tsunami. Earthquake - yes. Resultant tsunami - no.

No, but you would have to worry about the Mississippi pouring in. I'm not saying that St Louis has to worry about anything - I'm just saying that this event is pretty rare. The coasts of Florida are statistically more much at risk from hurricanes than Indian Ocean coasts from tsunamis. Heck, Atlanta gets hit by hurricanes more often than tsunamis hit areas of the Indian rim.

Its the pacific rim that has problems with tsunamis. But even then, a major tsunami maybe happens every 10 or 20 years somewhere in the world. The odds are pretty low.

This is why there is no problem with people rebuilding in these areas.

Yeah, I'm probably just being overly touchy about what Greg Ferrando said.
He sounded just like the envirowackies I knew.
(I used to be an envirowacky myself.)

Admittedly, nothing gets my patience at an end quicker than an enviro.

Pardon the crude nature of this post, but you might want to rethink your post.

If you have the stomach for it, enlarge the last one. I won't keep these things on my server very long. It is just too sad.

I don't blame you about prissy little Greg Ferrando.

I imagine him "sweating and glistening" like some guy on Baywatch.

ICK.

No, for sex of all kinds both over age and underage. Biblical? I don't have a direct line to God so all it would be is speculation on my part.

And the scary part is knowing that there is a hint of plausibility that some nutballs in this world would destroy it in order to save it...
