Sri Lankan Teenager Raped by Rescuer

GALLE, Sri Lanka (AP) - She survived the tsunami, only to suffer the brutality of her rescuer. On a pilgrimage to a temple, the 18-year-old and her family stopped for a picnic by the beach. That's when the tsunami struck.

Flailing in the water, the teenager heard a voice. "He told me to grab his hand, that he will save me," she said.

She and the stranger were swept into a muddy river. When they reached a bank, he pushed her into a bed of brambles and raped her.

"I screamed and told him not to hurt me," the shy teenager told The Associated Press. "He put his hands around my neck and told me that even if he kills me right there, no one will know."

Since the Dec. 26 tsunami, authorities have received many reports of sexual abuse - including attacks on children - at refugee camps and elsewhere. But there was no one to help the 18-year-old - the waves killed her father, mother and seven other relatives.

Earlier that day, the family and neighbors had left for the Kataragama temple, venerated by Buddhists and Hindus, to celebrate her father's 65th birthday.

Their bus, which carried 32 passengers, stopped at a beach. The girl was wading at the shore with two nieces when the waves crashed around them. Fourteen of the travelers died.

At the teenager's home in a village near the southern town of Galle, her only surviving sister displayed photographs of their parents, brothers, sisters and their families at weddings and birthday celebrations.

She allowed the AP to interview her younger sister on condition the teenager and the family would not be named and no photographs would be taken. They fear being ostracized by the village because of the attack.

After the rape, the teenager said, "I felt lifeless." Soaked with mud, her body itched all over from the thorns.

Dazed, she saw two figures approaching.

"He told me not to breath a word," she said. "He spoke to the men and left me with them. I didn't say anything and was terrified because they, too, were men."

The teenager was loaded into a truck with corpses and the injured. She recognized her brother's body and fainted.

At Karapitiya hospital, doctors and nurses were kind, she said. Dr. D. Wasantha said the teenager didn't mention the rape until a day after being admitted, and was initially treated for respiratory problems from inhaling water.

"She was very reluctant to talk and we didn't want to probe too much as she was already very upset and kept saying not to tell anyone," Wasantha said.

After learning of the rape, the doctor gave the young woman pills to prevent pregnancy.

"I don't want to talk to the police. They ask a lot of questions I don't understand and don't know how to respond," the teenager said, toying with the corner of her brown T-shirt.

The teenager lived a sheltered life before the tsunami, but she did go to college for a time, studying the Sinhalese language, political science and economics. She dropped out a year ago to take care of the family household.

"I want to be a journalist," she said when asked about the future. Her eyes lit up and she smiled faintly, but that faded when her aunt said they hoped some man would marry the teenager.

Her sister soon dampened any idea of a quick marriage: She said gossip already was swirling around the village, where rape brings stigma and shame to the victim rather than the rapist.

Sickening and disturbing.

Now, while I don't doubt that such things are ocurring in the wake of the tsunami tragedy, I can't help but wonder if there is a little more motive to this young girls story? Read the last 4 paragraphs again...

After learning of the rape, the doctor gave the young woman pills to prevent pregnancy.

To my knowledge there are no pills that prevent pregnancy after a rape. Something that would have already happened can't be prevented afterward.

There are pills that can end a pregnancy if fertilization occurs.

Before I start getting flamed, I just meant to say that it seems this young girl doesn't want to get married as much as her family wants her to.

At any rate, it is very sad that there are people taking advantage of this tragedy in such a way as to pour salt on an already open wound.

I hope the perverts get what they have coming to them.

"Pregnancy" is often/usually defined as a fertilized egg that has successfully implanted (into the uterine wall). High doses of estrogen (ie, the "morning after pill") generally prevent implantation of the fertilized egg and thus prevent the pregnancy (using the aforementioned definition).

Even by a "pregnancy is any fertilized egg" definition of pregnancy, you could still take the moning after pill before you were "pregnant", b/c it often takes many, many hours (up to 24-48) afterwards for any sperm to actually reach the egg and fertilize it.

I hope they catch the rapist and deliver justice for the crime, and I'm glad that this woman is safe now.

I am glad she is Buddist, rather than Muslim. As bad as they are, "stigma and shame" are not as bad as so-called "honor killings" for victims of rape.

While I commend your optimistic intent, your statement indirectly raises the sad point that neither is she Christian, which would be preferable to either of the other two. Not just in general, of course, but also in terms of coping with this specific tragedy.

When they reached a bank, he pushed her into a bed of brambles and raped her.

Perhaps there is an error in translation or other problem, but I find it reduces the credibility of the account when she says that here rapist pushed her into a bet of brambles, and then raped her. The rapist would end up with some damage from the brambles as well, and I suspect he would have picked a different location.

Of course this is not definitive, but I suspect a rapist would be fairly absorbed in his own pleasure and comfort.

There are many reports of the rapes that have happened as a result of this disaster.

Some on young boys.

I have not kept the links to the articles, too up setting.

Several areas have stopped the adoptions of the orphans and there are reports of children stolen from the camps.

Indonesian Embassy says no truth to messages urging Aceh adoptions

SINGAPORE (DPA): The Indonesian Embassy Thursday refuted text
messages
circulating in Singapore asking Muslim parents to adopt 300 orphans
from the devastated Indonesian province of Aceh.

Amid fears of child-trafficking in the chaotic aftermath of the Dec.
26 tsunami, an embassy spokesman said there will be no adoption of
Acehnese children for the time being.

"When the government has lifted the ban on Acehnese orphans (being
adopted), those who wish to have these children must abide by
Indonesian law," Widya Rahmanto told The Straits Times.

One of the messages lists a Malaysian contact number. It says, "Please
ask among friends who would like to adopt orphans from Aceh. 300
orphans coming soon. Need Muslim homes. Christian missionaries want
them. Pls help!"

Another also warned that a Christian association is "willing to take
them all".

A ban on adoptions from Aceh was announced earlier this week after the
United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) warned that child-trafficking
gangs may be selling orphaned children into forced labor or sexual
slavery in other countries in the region.

The Indonesian government estimates that 35,000 children have
beenorphaned or separated from their parents inthe province. (**)

DO NOT READ THIS POST, IF YOU ARE EASY TO UPSET!!!!!!!

As a rule, I do not save posts such as this, I pass them on to where they need to be read and attempt to forget them.

After reading the 2 posts that I have sent to you, there are still doubts of how horrible the situation is, then go to Google and start digging, as there is so much more that we are not getting on the regular news........after all, if you knew the truth, you might make your donations to the Salvation Army and it is more difficult to steal the money from them.

Don't say that I didn't warn you.

The post-tsunami scenario in Sri Lanka is going from
the bizarre to the
more bizarre.
Rajpal Abeynayake - Reporting for Asian Tribune from
Sri Lanka

Colombo, 05 January, (Asiantribune.com): The
newspapers are full of
stories about sexual abuse of some girls who were
Tsunami victims, by
various unscrupulous elements who have infiltrate the
refugee camps.
Though the National Child Protection Authority has said
that such
incidents are few and far between, some incidents of
molestation and
rape are reported to have taken place.

Meanwhile, this writer been made aware of a different
perversion that
took place soon after the Tsunami stuck.

In some areas, necrophilia was evident --- when
certain persons were
caught having sexually abused the corpses of females.

Dr Harischandra, a psychiatric in Galle said: this sort of
ghoulish and
reprehensible behavior though the work of a miniscule
few, nevertheless
has given a bad name to all Sri Lankans who rose up
magnificently to the
demands of the crisis and acted with a great deal of
social responsibility.

The other bizarre occurrence is the rumor that a
Tsunami will strike
again between January the 3rd and the 8th. These are
obvious
scare-stories spread by mischievous elements. (How
can a Tsunami be
predicted anyway before and earthquake -- because
the Tsunami can arise
only out of an earthquake?)

The President said she will ‘’hang’’ producers of
television programs,
who peddle these scare stories, but so far nobody has
been sent to the
gallows but the rumors continue unabated.

Another bizarre story: none of the Buddha statues
down south or in the
costal belt have been effected. Not even a glass pane
protecting the
Buddha statue has been shattered in Galle, which has
been virtually
rendered a ghost town after the ravages of the
Tsunami.

Naturally, people are prone to give various
superstitious
interpretations - - but Dr Harichandra says “I do not
know of any force
nature which will spare Buddha statues made of clay
and take the lives
of some very learnered and pious Buddhist monks and
many devout
Buddhists on the day of the Tsunami -- a Poya Day.’’

With all the bizarre stories gong around, its becoming
increasingly
obvious that the tsunami not only ravaged the country
in material terms
-- it also caused severe mental stress among all Sri
Lankans, victims or
otherwise. As Dr Harischandra says “those who saw
dead bodies piled up
in Galle hospital had to be given separate psychiatric
are to cope with
their stress.’’

This report will give a good background to the child abuse.

There have been reports that in some areas the large numbers of missing tourist men, is a part of the child sex trade.

I have found several threads that offer advise on how to hide your photos, taken of the acts.

In the U.S., if you have been on vacation alone in the child sex towns, then you may be questioned when you come back to the U.S. and your camera checked.

It is against the law to have child sex photos in the U.S.

It was upsetting to see the question asked, but to see good answers from 25 or 30 men, on how they get the photos into the U.S., well it leaves me shaking with rage.

This is a 2002 report, found in Google groups in the:

BALI: A safe Haven for international pedophiles

by

Aditya Nusantara
and
Magdalena Damayanti
The Jakarta Post

Although Bali is known around the world for its
unique culture and beautiful scenery, it has been
attracting more than just tourists wanting to explore
its charm. Pedophiles from several foreign
countries
have been frequenting the resort island, according
to
experts and scholars.

Disguising themselves as rich tourists, numerous
overweight middle-aged men and business-like
visitors,
as well as many other foreigners, come to the island
with one thing on their minds: to prey on
underaged
boys and girls, reports said.

In many parts of the island, mainly in the remote
and
poor villages, there is no shortage of boys and girls
available to provide sexual services to these
pedophiles. Many poverty-stricken parents cannot
afford to send their children to school and allow
them to roam the streets and beaches -- public
areas
that make them easy targets for adult sex
offenders.

Luh Ketut Suryani, a professor of psychiatry at the
Denpasar-based University of Udayana, said Bali
was a
popular tourist destination that could be a safe
haven for pedophiles around the world to stalk
their
prey.

"The illicit practice also occurs in several Asian
tourist hubs, such as Thailand, the Philippines,
Vietnam, Cambodia and now Myanmar," the
professor
said.

Over the last few years, cases of pedophilia have
been documented extensively in the United States
and
some European countries, and involve adults from
various backgrounds, ranging from celebrities and
executives to even religious leaders.

In Jakarta, the 1997 case of Robot Gedek, who
allegedly sodomized and killed a number of street
children, shocked those living in the capital.

Bali also reported a case of pedophilia when an
Italian tourist, Mario Manarra, was accused of
fondling and sodomizing young boys in the Lovina
beach area near Singaraja of North Bali in August
last year. This was the first case of pedophilia that
went to trial in Bali. He was sentenced to 10 months
in jail.

"Reports of pedophilia in Bali and anywhere else in
Indonesia are only the tip of the iceberg. We only
know what is on the surface. In reality, it's so
dangerous and life threatening to our children, our
future generation," the professor said.

Pedophilia, she said, was a type of psychosexual
disorder in which adults -- men or women -- were
only
sexually attracted to children.

"Many pedophiles usually have a low self-esteem
and
see sexual activity with a child as more arousing
and
less threatening than with an adult," Suryani said.
Their sexual activities vary from genital display to
sexual intercourse.

In western countries, pedophilia is considered a
very
serious sexual offense. These countries have stern
laws and regulations against pedophiles and
enforce
very severe penalties against adults who have sex
with children.

Pedophilia often involves forced action and violence
against children. "They are abusing children who are
still physically and emotionally vulnerable," Suryani
said. That is why, in western countries, the younger
the child and the greater the difference in age
between the pedophile and the victim, the more
severe
the punishment was, she said.

The Philippines and Thailand, she said, had strict
laws against pedophiles and set up a cooperation
with
the International Police (Interpol) and the
pedophiles' countries of origin to collaborate in
apprehending them.

Strangely, Suryani said, the Balinese and its
authorities do not seem to mind or be aware of this
dangerous social issue.

Indonesia has ratified the United Nations
Convention
on Children's Rights, however, the nation is not so
serious in implementing it into law. Crimes and
violence against children are contained in articles
289 to 298 of the Criminal Code (KUHP).

Fortunately, there are a number of civil society
groups concerned about children's welfare. They
include Lembaga Perlindungan Anak (Children
Protection Agency) and Komite Pendidikan
Anak-Anak
Kreatif Indonesia (Education Committee of Creative
Indonesian Children) in Jakarta; Girli in Yogyakarta;
and Kelompok Sadar (Awareness Group) in
Surabaya,
East Java.

"In Bali, we have just set up the Committee Against
Sexual Abuse (CASA), which will help those
suffering
from traumatic childhood experiences," Suryani
said.

Across Asia, tens of thousands of children are
pushed
into the sex trade each year. According to the
International Labor Organization (ILO), at least one
million children work as formal and informal
prostitutes. In Asia, including Indonesia, practices
of child prostitution and child sexual abuse have
been on the rise.

In Bali, several villages, including Ban, Tianyar and
Pedaha in Karang Asem, East Bali -- one of the
poorest regencies in Bali -- have become popular
among pedophiles for being safe places. In the
Buleleng regency of North Bali, numerous
pedophiles
look for children in villages such as Lovina beach,
Kalibukbuk, Kaliasem, Kayu Putih, Selata and
Anturan.

"Poverty is still blamed as the underlying reason for
pedophiles operating in the areas. The majority of
parents (of exploited children) work as cheap
unskilled laborers or farmers, who have to spend
most
of their time in the field," said Suryani.

Rohman, a staff member at Yayasan Anak Kita
Foundation, said pedophile cases in Bali were
alarming. Between l992 and 2002, the foundation
had
discovered that 13 suspected pedophiles were
actively
operating in Bali, and there were at least 60 victims
aged five years old to 13 years old who reported
their stories of abuse. This number excludes other
victims who have not yet come forward, Rohman
said.

>From data and information available on the
subject,

centers for pedophiles are located in the famous
art
village of Ubud along with other areas, such as
Seminyak, Kuta, Lovina and Karangasem.

"Some pedophiles may know each other and hold
regular
meetings in Kuta," said Rohman, who declined to
name
his sources. "If I mentioned their names, they
would
be in danger."

A number of children and teenagers, he said, had
disappeared for unknown reasons, and the
foundation's
reports were not properly processed.

The foundation, which has conducted a
comprehensive
investigation into pedophilia since l998, said that
l973 might have been the first time pedophiles
arrived in Bali. "They were disguised as tourists
from Germany," the study said.

In the l980s, Kuta was a major destination for
European pedophiles, especially those from
Germany
and France, the study said. Karangasem was their
next
target. Acting as generous and kind-hearted people,
pedophiles won the hearts of locals by claiming to
be
"foster fathers" who sought needy children around
Bali, and promised parents they would provide a
better education and future for their children, the
study said.

"They were regarded as 'Santa Clauses' in those
poor
villages. Nobody had the courage to report their
sexual misconduct toward children and students,"
Rohman said.

He said that to facilitate their illegal sexual
activities, pedophiles bribed parents with money,
food, other basic needs and household goods, while
local village heads and police officials obtained
various "incentives" in the form of donations,
village improvement projects, health and education
training and rental cars for police officers.

Lenient punishment and people's lack of awareness
on
the dangers of pedophiles' activities have
encouraged
irresponsible people to exploit local children.

Unless Indonesia enacts the necessary laws and
regulations to protect its children, pedophiles from
around the globe will be able to operate in Bali and
other places across the nation.

Just a note to all the doubting readers, I'm positive the doctor who gave her the pill would have had to check her physically to confirm the incident. As well, the wording of the article can be blamed on the reporter, and has nothing to do with the girl.
For those that think the story is too tragic to be true, I'm worried about your ignorance of reality. Unfortunately, these stories are all too true and happen too often. I'm not surprised that in the aftermath of such a horrible tragedy, there are those who take advantage of the vulnerability and desperation of the victims. The victims of 9/11 were very lucky there were so many people on scene who cared about their wellbeing, partly because they had the ability to do something. Please, you've seen the media pictures, how would you feel if you were there? Scared, lost, vulnerable, in shock, devastated, helpless...? You'd be an easy target...

The other reason that 911 didn't have these problems is because it wouldn't take long for americans to band together and kick the azz out of anyone that tried to harm anyone else, and we didn't have the UN and their 3rd world people come down and try to take advantage of us because they know how well informed the america people are.
