My take is that Newt, the original thinking history prof who sees history in 50 to 100 year intervals, is setting himself up to catch arrows and spears. He will do the thinking and write policy while remaining out of the way.

His mind is feared by the leftist elite. His vision is adequate to exterminate the leftist blight on American society.

I understand what you all are saying about Newt being a good lightening rod for the rest of the pack, and it has value.

However, I do want to remind everybody that this 'He cant win!' was the principle 'criticism' of Reagan in 1976. It turned out later to be utterly false as the first time the American people had a chance to vote for a candidate that believes in the value and uniqueness of America, they turn out in droves in support of him.

When Reagan ran in 76, the Nelson Rockefeller wing, Rocky-Reps, went with Ford to keep their man as VP. When Ford lost, they blamed it on the prominence the 'loser' Reagan had gained in the primaries. I still remember that.

When Reagan ran again in 80, the Rocky-Reps fell in behind George Bush the First and supported him. When Reagan chose to unite the Republican Party by picking Bush as his running mate, the Rocky-Reps went along figuring that down the road they would isolate and purge the original Reagan supporters, and they did. By the time George Bush the First finished his first term, all the old Reaganites were gone and the Bushies were disparaging his memory by leaking embarrassing facts to the press like Nancy's use of an astrologer (overblown, IMO) and Reagans sleepiness during staff meetings.

George Bush the Second is of the same cloth as his Daddy. He represents the old Rocky-Rep line of Republicans that are elitist and suspicious of anyone that takes culture or religion seriously instead of measuring everything by the dollar, though W himself does not share all these views.

W is just loyal to his family and his families old friends, and those people do him a disservice with their advice on things that undermine the middle class and culture of this country and that is exactly what W's proposed 'guest worker' amnesty will do.

That will destabilize us internally which is what the neoMarxist left wants. Horrowitz knows this, and that is one reason why his Frontpage magazine is solidly opposed to the continuation of open borders with Mexico.

So, back to Newt. Unless someone can show me some FACTS that make him unelectable, I consider that reaction to be a bit of a knee-jerk just the same as people once displayed toward Reagan himself.

Maybe people are as wrong about Newt as these same people were about Reagan?
