The Crusades didn't go so badly as counterattacks go. Muslims driven out of France, Spain, Italy and turned back in the Balkans.
If your point is that the Catholic Church is disproved as a valid religion by the failings of its members, then you perhaps you are mistaken about the point of religion.

That wasn't MY point at all. Misbehavior by individuals only proves that individuals, even when acting on behalf of a higher calling, are still fallible: it doesn't discredit or repudiate the higher calling.
