Millions of American women have begun implementing their New Year's resolutions for 2005. For many, the focus will go beyond shedding extra pounds gained over the holidays and on the worthy goal of getting personal finances in shape and planning for retirement. A December spending spree has likely bloated already hefty credit-card debt for many women and their families. As personal-finance adviser Suze Orman might say, getting out of debt is the first step to financial freedom.
Yet this year, on top of the financial-freedom "to do" list must be to write your representatives in Congress. That's because a looming policy battle over Social Security is certain to have a big impact on our pocketbooks and our retirements. President Bush's recent economic summit in Washington gave Americans a preview of his 2005 domestic agenda. Saving Social Security was his top priority, and with good reason: The venerable program faces a looming financial crisis.
