Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, whose high-flying presidential campaign crashed a year ago in the political chill of Iowa, announced Tuesday that he will run for the chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee.
In a statement on his Internet blog titled "I'm running," Dean said that the Democratic Party must cultivate its grassroots and contest every race at every level.
"We will only win when we show up and fight for the issues important to all of us," Dean said in the statement.
He said that the Democrats must become the party of reform.
"The Democratic Party will not win elections or build a lasting majority solely by changing its rhetoric, nor will we win by adopting the other side's positions," he said. "We must say what we mean -- and mean real change when we say it."

All I can say to this is "RUN Howard RUN!" This would be the best thing for the Democratic party Seriously, we should contain ourselves in our excitment of Chairman Dean..the Dems may get wise to it like they did last time we were keen on him for the nominee and they all bailed in favor of the war protester.
To: paudio
yes dems, please please pretty please stay close to your "principles." Michelman would be an even better chair of the DNC than Dean because it would show America the truth - that nothing matters more to you than unlimited abortion (look at how you're treating Roemer)

Funny. I thought they DID show up last time...wasn't defeating George their MOST IMPORTANT issue?
Man, I just hope he does get the chairmanship... it will make things so much more funny around here!

"Dean is their Goldwater. Let's be careful what we wish for."
Hey! I resemble that remark!
Please don't compare a nutjob like Howard Dean to Senator Barry Goldwater. The views espoused by Senator Goldwater were consistent with America's national character and thus struck a chord with a majority of Americans, although it took most of them a few years to realize it. The GOP was rebuilt by Ronald Reagan on the footsteps of Goldwater's 1964 campaign, and it led to three straight electoral college landslides for the GOP (until George H.W. Bush pissed it all away by raising taxes). By comparison, Howard Dean's positions will not transform the Democrat Party into a majority party because they are anathema to America's national character. The majority of Americans will not rally around abortion and bigger government and defeatism, even if Dean can get a few thousand useful idiots to attend his rallies.

Carl Cameron on Fox just reported that if Dean gets the job, many conservative southern Dems have said privately they will leave the party. Have you heard any names mentioned?

"Carl Cameron on Fox just reported that if Dean gets the job, many conservative southern Dems have said privately they will leave the party."
Very interesting, yet unsurprising. It must be getting harder and harder for moderates and conservatives in the South to identify themselves with a Democrat Party that keeps going further left. But I assume that the Southern Dems who have said they will switch are almost exclusively state and local level officials. There are very few conservative Southern Democrats left in Congress, especially after the 2004 Texas redistricting. I count just a handful of Southern Democrat Congressmen who are conservative enough that I would accept in the GOP: Gene Taylor (MS), Mike McIntyre (NC), Solomon Ortiz (TX), Marion Berry (AR), Sanford Bishop (GA), and maybe the new guy elected in Louisiana (Melancon). Of those, I think Taylor is the only one who may switch, although he hasn't switched yet in spite of sitting in a district that gave Bush close to 70% of the vote.

The DNC could care less about the Southern defections. RATS on the West and East Coasts think very little of the South. The liberal elitists wish the South would go away.
