Russert: CBS ID'd Source of Rathergate Docs
NewsMax.com ^ | 1/12/05 | Carl Limbacher

CBS News executives know the identity of the person who gave "60 Minutes II" producer Mary Mapes forged documents on President Bush's National Guard record, but are refusing to identify the source publicly.

That's the claim from NBC Washington bureau chief Tim Russert, who leveled the bombshell allegation Wednesday morning. "I think the interesting thing is the documents - where did they come from?" Russert told radio host Don Imus. "Somebody at CBS knows where the documents came from - and the credibility of that person, and the agenda of that person," he said.

Taken aback, Imus asked, "So they all know, in other words?" Russert replied bluntly, "Yeah."

The NBC newser said it was wrong for Mapes' boss Dan Rather not to reveal at the outset - if not the source's identity, at least the fact that he or she had partisan motives.

So why doesn't CBS News come clean now and reveal the identity of the person who forced Rather to retire from his anchor post and destroyed the credibility of its news division?

"They can't give up their source - they can't compromise their source," Russert insisted.

I'm thinking it must lead right to Kerry, or his campaign.

For several days I've said that if Rather didn't know the person who gave CBS the forged documents, he should be launching a full out investigation. That he hasn't done so speaks volumes.

Wonder if this is why JFK is doing the "Don't I look presidential" tour?

They can't give up the source? I might buy it if the documents were real. Then CBS would be keeping their part of the deal but these docs were fake and that inherently broke the contract.

It must be explosive if CBS is willing to sit on it.

Guesses? I'm betting it can be traced back to the Democrats in some fashion.

They have to protect a compromised source? No wonder CBS still doesn't get it. If they name him or her, its good as an admission they knew the documents were a fake all along but they had an agenda. Like DUH.

Hmm, I wonder if Russert feels the same way about Bob Novak's refusal to out his source for the Valerie Plame non-story? Or is he part of the pack howling at Novak to divulge that source because "journalistic ethics" demand it?

Three guesses and the first two don't count.

Wasn't it speculated at the time that Rather's daughter may
have been the one who gave the info to Daddy?

"They can't give up their source - they can't compromise their source," Russert insisted

It's because the source was someone highly partisan, probably in the DNC, and revealing it will expose the "political bias" issue.

Since they won't identify the source That person must be mucho grande en the Party. If they won't identify that person after all this, they are complicit themselves....

I've heard her name floated, but I'm not sure I really picture her commissioning the forged documents.
