A ROMAN Catholic priest has been murdered in his parish on Java.
Father Thomas Harsidiyono, a 49-year-old priest in the town of Purworejo in Central Java province, suffered a massive head wound when he was attacked in the compound of a Catholic retreat, police detective chief Sibri Kartiananto said.
Provincial police chief Chairul Rasyid said the motive for the killing, which follows a string of sectarian attacks on Christians in the world's largest Muslim-populated country, was "probably" robbery.
"I see this case as purely criminal," he said.
Hariyanti, an official with the Holy Mother of Mary Church where Harsidiyono had served, described him as "a saint, a good man".
"He had no enemies. No threats have been made to this church prior to his death. We're still baffled with his death."
Indonesia has seen intermittent communal violence between Muslims and Christians since 1999 in the eastern provinces of Maluku and Central Sulawesi.
The latest incident followed the unsolved shooting of a man in the grounds of a church in the province's Poso district in October 2004.
In the same month, a Hindu woman was killed and two Christian men wounded during a random shooting on the same day two Christians were hacked to death near the provincial capital Palu.

Robbery. Right. Everybody knows priests carry large amounts of cash. That's the only reason someone in a muslim country would murder a priest. Yeah. Robbery. That's the ticket.
Randy Moss is quiting the Vikings to become a Priest because of the cash and he wonderful morals. Mostly for the cash though.
Are you sure it's not so he can have an easier time getting a date?
Now why would tourists want to give their money to support a hell-hole like Indonesia? The more we read about this country and its government in the past few days, the more benevolent the tsunami seems.
"I see this case as purely criminal," he said.
This is one of the worst lies I have seen lately. The Islamic Radicals kill Christians as a matter of their religion.
I would suspect that some of the recent inflammatory anti-Christian and anti-Western statements from the Indonesian government and Muslim loonies encouraged this. We'll probably see more attacks on Christians in Indonesia, unfortunately, during the post-tsunami clean up.
I can only hope our troops are aware of the risks, and are able to take precautions.
Maybe he will get murdered and mocked by you as well?
