London 14.01.05 | Hugo Chavez, the greatest pariah ever to govern our nation, has just frozen diplomatic and trade relations with Colombia. The embarrassing thing for us decent Venezuelans is the reason for this breakage, i.e. the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). Rodrigo Granda, FARC leader, was captured in Caracas by bounty hunters, when he was attending, as guest of honour, a Bolivarian celebration organized by the government of Venezuela. The Chavez regime then incurred in a series of mishaps, distortions and outright lies to cover its cosy relationship with the terrorist, who happened to have been naturalized in one of these 'wonderful social missions' that Chavez has invented. It turns out that the government of Alvaro Uribe, which is waging an open war against terrorism and the drug industry, put a price on Granda's head knowing that he was in Venezuela and someone took the bait and delivered the terrorist leader wrapped in gift paper. How any sensible head of State would have reacted to such wonderful news? Probably by congratulating whoever captured the outlaw whilst commissioning an investigation into all aspects of the issue. What does Hugo Chavez do? He freezes trade relations with Venezuela's second largest commercial partner. Quite obviously for Chavez the provision of a safe haven to international terrorists tops the agenda.

Well - Freezing political and commercial relations with their largest trading partner along with the Zimbabwe style agrarian "Reform" should pretty well do it for the Venezualan people. Let's hope so. Starvation and unrest to follow.
In other words, using George Bush's definition of who should be targeted in the worldwide war on terror, Chavez is fair game.

What will probably happen is some international incident to distract peoples' attention from the miserable domestic situation...

I don't think Chavez would dare to attack Colombia, because he knows that would give us reason to get involved. He's basically taunting us, taking advantage of the fact that we are busy in the Mid East right now, but I don't think he dares to go too far. Yet.
But he's a busy little beaver, and is busy forging alliances with all of our enemies. By the time we get around to dealing with him, he may be so powerful (or supported by so many of our enemies, at least) that he'll be untouchable. That's his plan, at least.
Not really...... I think it's the first thing we need.
First, it allows the US to deploy Armed Forces in the area "legally" to stabilize and protect US interests.
Second, Shining Path and all the other quasi-communist/socialist/anarchist drug thugs get to have it out with Special Forces in a jungle environment.
Thirdly, China will NEVER be allowed to influence anything in our hemisphere. They may have a billion soldiers but unless they've become real good swimmers they are not capable of the Sea Lift/Air Lift capacity to supply them. This might be some ploy with negotiations about Taiwan.
Finally, every 20-30 years we need to go down there and kick ass, put people in charge that like America and leave. El Salvador, Guatemala, Chile, Nicaragua (twice within 40 years) come to mind.
The best way of stopping illegal immigration is to make the countries that produce the illegals to become a capitalistic, job producing country. If we can get rid of the Utopians and free them the whole of South America would be prosperous. As is evident the Venezuelans are being pushed into starvation, dependence and criminal disorder (just like Mugabe, Stalin and what the Democrats in this country are trying to do), thereby citizens are needing the "assistance" of government... and willingly putting the shackles on. Kinda sad.
Mexico is also on the list of socialist, thug rule..... but we're to polite to mention that in the MSM.
What would we use to get involved, a call up of R.O.T.C. cadets from our colleges and universities? We don't have the manpower to do a thing. Let's just hope China doesn't have a go at Taiwan.

Yes! Very well put. Socialist hell-holes bleed people at the seams - heck, I'd be crawling across the Rio Grande myself if I lived in one of them. And what you said about Mexico is absolutely the truth, too; I wish we were more realistic in dealing with that loser country.
I don't think a land war would be necessary. In addition, any kind of conflict would probably set off the many people in VZ who want Chavez out of there - well, actually, dead - so I don't think he'd risk it now.
I wanted to bring up the fact that China runs the Panama Canal, but I googled "panama canal administration china" and didn't find anything newer than late 1999. All on the controversy. Nothing I could find stated that they actually took over the administration of the canal, so I you must be right.
