An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale has been detected at off the Pacific island group of Micronesia, the Hong Kong observatory said today. "The epicentre was initially determined to be over the seas of the western part of Micronesia, about 330km east-northeast of (the island of) Yap," the observatory said.
The quake, classified in Hong Kong as "severe", was recorded at 4:24 am, it said.
There were no immediate reports of tsunamis or damage on nearby islands.

Any tsunamis? If so, it's surely time to call the UN.....

No tsunami's yet but expect the U.N. to put out a statement in the next few minutes stating how stingy the U.S. has been to this potential disaster.

What is it with AFP?
"The epicentre was initially determined to be over the seas of the western part of Micronesia, about 330km east-northeast of (the island of) Yap," the observatory said.
An earthquake that takes place above the seas? And 330km away from the nearest island? It's not even a news story. It's a scientific footnote.

From
CIA World Factbook -

Background - In 1979 the Federated States of Micronesia, a UN Trust Territory under US administration, adopted a constitution. In 1986 independence was attained under a Compact of Free Association with the US. Present concerns include large-scale unemployment, overfishing, and overdependence on US aid.

Must be some local dialect.
The depth of the 'quake was placed at 55km (down),
which is reasonably deep, and seems to be less
threatening than shallower quakes like the 10k
in the Atlantic last week.
It is possible for quakes to have negative depth.
It seems to me that some of the Mt. St. Helens
activity has been -depth.
Who knows how a bolide event might be positioned.

No doubt Micronesia has been severely depressed over the recent U.S. election results. Now, as the dreaded inauguration nears, the chain of islands can take no more.
Clearly Bush's fault.

Coincidentally, the epicenter is not too far from the location where our submarine ( SS San Francisco) hit the underwater seamount.
Note: I do not think the two are more than coincidentally related...

At least it isn't 9.0. To think, I use to think a 6.6 was devastating.

A 6.6 will not produce any tsunami of any appreciable size.

Perhaps more quakes will be coming because of the Giant Sunspot 720 that will be blasting X Level Solar Flares and magnetic waves at our planet? (i.e. Magnetic waves may cause the core of the earth to react with magma outflows). Whatever . . . Oh, well.
