It's time to drive a stake into this continuing saga less it become the new grassy knoll for the left-wing pundits and blogosphere. I accept the challenge.
[snip]
how do I prove this memo is a fake? Easy -- for the weekend that 1st Lt. Bush was supposedly ordered to report for his physical, May 13-14, 1972, the Ellington Air Guard Base was closed. It was Mother's Day. Except for emergencies, Air Guard units never drilled on Mother's Day; the divorce lawyers would be waiting at the gate.

The clearest explanation of why the CBS documents are forgeries. It doesn't rely on any technical claims about proportional spacing typewriters ("yes they had them, no they didn't).

And a post office box number on the letterhead
And the st after the 1..........even in this letter it says 1st.....but in the military it's 1LT without the st, or 2nd.....

IMHO, that said it all. CBS will never regain its believability.

The other issue the idiot forgers screwed up are the windows regarding flight physicals.
They expire on the last day of the aviators birth month. With a birthday in July, Bush's physical wasn't due for a good two months. No way this issue gets elevated to the CO's Radar Screen!

re: The lesson here: If you are a big media entity with a political agenda and have reporters with a five-year obsession to get George Bush on his Guard service even if it means using fake documents from an incredible source (hint to USA Today) get Kirkpatrick & Lockhart. ------
Good lawyer indeed.
Can you say "whitewash"?
This episode should not be dropped. It should linger and continue as when back in 1772 the Watergate break-in first occurred.
Someday soon one of these fired goons at CBS should have something to say. BTW, is Burkett in a straight jacket in a rubber room down in Texas?
This story must continue until Dan Rather is behind bars or tarred and feathered.

I saw a great advert for CBS the other day on Tv.
It said "Why watch what everybody else is watching?"
I think it was on the Simpsons.
To: commonguymd
I hadn't heard it before, either, which is why I posted it.
The nice thing is that this is so simple that even a liberal can understand it, without having to grasp such complexities as font sizes, proportional spacing, and the fact that a TANG unit would be very unlikely to have a state of the art typewriter.

While CBS, in its rush to judgment, might have missed this fatal flaw in the Burkett memo, its investigative law firm, Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson Graham LLP, cannot be excused. Why? Because one of their investigating lawyers was informed of this fact on Nov. 15 and given a list of seven witnesses who worked in the same offices with Jerry Killian every day in 1972. (Disclosure statement: I was the source.) The panel report makes no mention of this, and a canvass of most of the witness list reveals no contact attempt by Kirkpatrick & Lockhart. Busted.

The author is more than likely correct.
I was in the Georgia Air National Guard (GANG) for seven years, and we never met on Mother's Day.
One possibility is that he was "ordered" to report to an active duty base? I am not sure, but if he was, his time could have either been recoded as active duty, weekend make-up, advanced week-end training, or extra time (which some call Guard-bumming).
Having not paid much attention to the orders, I can't be sure of any details. I can promise you that if the physical was scheduled to have taken place on a guard or reserve facility, this is a slam dunk for the president.
If it was to have occurred on an active duty base, it's still an open possibility, even though most medical people would be smart enough to schedule around mother's day.

Something bothers me about all this - in my mind it is not enough to just be right. The next fakes and forgeries will be better - you can count on it. To attempt to bring down a sitting president is beyond compare. But, it seems that for most including the White House - "just being right" is enough.
You are right - this is so easy to understand and cannot be refuted.

Why would he be ordered to take a Physical that was no where near expiring and outside the allowable window to take? Medical wouldn't even take an appointment for a physical scheduled so early!

I agree that I never took a physical outside of my birth month.
My experiences don't sum up all there is to know about base hospital practices.
Surely, I believe this was a hoaxed letter, but if all I had to rely on was the author's conclusions, they'd be pretty weak.

One possibility is that he was "ordered" to report to an active duty base? If President Bush's birthday is in July then he would not be receiving an order to get his physical in May. Physicals are scheduled according to birth month and an initial scheduling in May would be the norm, not a commander's letter ordering a physical that didn't expire for almost three months. A commander's letter like the forged one would never have been issued until after July when Mr. Bush would have been grounded for an overdue physical. Had Mr. Bush been ordered to report to an active duty base it would not have had a deadline for May 14, 1972 as that was a Sunday, a day when active duty bases would have had the day off. Only Guard and Reserve bases would schedule physicals on drill weekends. This just again shows not only how sloppy the forger was but how sloppy the whitewash "investigation" was.

If the memo was dated the 4th of May and said to report 'no later then 5/14' doesn't that give GWB 10 days to get the physical?
I certainly believe the docs are a fraud but in this case I must be missing something. What is it I'm missing?

To: JoeV1
You're missing the fact that there is a permitted window around the Aviator's birth month to take the physical. These days it's thirty days before your birthday.
With a Birthday of July 6th, medical would not be permitted to administer an annual physical before the regulated window. I believe May 14th would be too early with a birthday of July 6th.
The rules on the "Window" have changed several times over the years so I may be incorrect about 1972.

It is my understanding, from serving in the military, that a base commander would never 'order' a physical, that's at the unit level. A base commander would never even know that a physical is due.

...and the fact that a TANG unit would be very unlikely to have a state of the art typewriter. Let's clarify something. The Selectric Compositor, which conceivably could have produced the documents (if the user had presciently known how typescript would be kerned by a specific software programmer some ten or twelve years hence), was NOT A TYPEWRITER.
It was, instead, a typesetting machine -- extremely expensive and highly complex, to be found only in the backrooms of the typehouses (businesses which expressly served the advertising industry and publishers).
In point of fact, it should not even be a consideration in the CBS imbroglio -- because no TANG personnel, officers or secretaries, would've even known the damn thing existed (unless their day job was in an advertising agency, publisher or typehouse), much less how to operate it.
This machine is as relevant to the CBS story as a nuclear reactor would be to the Hottentots.
