The community in this case would be "National" as CBS broadcasts are "National" if it were only broadcast in certain communities than it would not be national.

Betcha Clown Wildmon watched it 20 or 30 times just to make sure he was offended.

Probably not far off. They have people on staff who do nothing but watch tapes of network shows over and over, rewinding to make sure they catch all the "naughty" bits.

I prefer to let the free market do the work.

Agreed. And add to that the vaunted "V Chip," and those who do not wish to be "subjected" to "offensive" television do not have to.

Then again, I guess Wildmon & his thought police need to be there for us. [/sarcasm]

Then the question has been answered by the public. The show is immensely popular and hasn't lost any substantial amount of viewers over the allegedly salacious scene.

I'm not sure what you are complaining about, there is no nudity or foul language in the scene.

Hmmm.. so now we are saying that citizens must "OPT OUT", of offensive material rather than "OPT IN" to it? I don't think we really want to go down that road

The question is wheter the scene is appropriate for public broadcast, if you think so, so be it.. end of discussion.... if not, what should be done about it?

We go down that road every day. Take radio for instance, how many stations do you turn off, while you tune into your favorite station? Do you want all of the other stations off of the air? If we selectively tune into the music that we favor, how is it different from tuning into the television stations that we favor, while ignoring the rest of television's line-up?

The issue is "PUBLIC" vs. "PRIVATE" not whether it is easy to OPT In or Out... Put the show on PAY PER VIEW and end of discussion or edit it for PUBLIC BROADCAST.. that is if you think it is inapropriate for public broadcast in the first place

And how do you determine what is appropriate?

I haven't watched Desperate Housewives, seems to me the rest of America loves it. How is it I should speak out against their viewing? Who made me the television police?

I watched an episode where these girls acted like they would have sex with this boy after they got him down to his underwear they tied him up and threw Horse dung on him. As I watched I was thinking "this is kiddie porn" . There is no doubt in my mind if any pedophile had put this on a website he could have been arrested. Is this what people feel has a right to be shown on Network TV?

Just because a network does it instead of a pedophile doing it doesnt make it allright.

These people are perverts. They watch TV to cull the most graphic sex scenes, replay them many times to make sure they are "inappropriate" - and then complain that the public shouldn't be allowed to watch them!

As I watched I was thinking "this is kiddie porn"

So I assume you immediately quit watching the episode?

Doing battle with the Soddomites today David? I scanned through the thread quickly and didn't see what I feel is the ONLY question that has any relevance to the discussion: Given a society/culture/nation/whatever, has the right to expect and enforce some minimum standards of behavior on its members; where do we as a group draw the lines?

If history, particularly the Bible, holds any lessons, it would be that our society...etc, seems to be heading in a direction that will ultimately lead to moral collapse. Of course, that would just be the beginning of the end.

A simple test(for a simple mind) to me is, is any given behavior dragging us in the wrong direction, or leading us in the right direction. Clearly, most of the smut on teevee(and elsewhere) is not leading us to the promised land.

Why would it not be appropriate? It is not obscene and it breaks no laws.

Why not just have porn on cable and those who want it can have it --- that's not censorship. Unsolicited porn is a problem --- it's interesting how in the workplace an offcolor joke can get someone sued for harassment for far far less. You can't discuss many shows on television now in the work place or you could be fired --- things have gotten inconsistent.

These kinds of articles are useless. They are inflammatory but have no substance.

I guess they might drum up emails to government, but the emails are likely to be less informational than this post, which is nearly non-existent.
