That does look suspiciously like a Mac back there. And were'nt the Macs introduced in '84? Maybe that was a prototype. The PC looks like either a PC/AT, or an XT clone, and has a 1/2 height floppy drive. The PCs that I saw in the early 80's were still sporting full height floppy drives, and there weren't too many clone makers at the time other than Compaq, The PC/ATs were also introduced in '84, IRRC.

Many Apple computers were around a few years before Macintosh.

Yes, I know.

I used to program on them.

Is that an Apple computer behind him or an IBM Lisa?

It looks like the misbegotten IBM PCjr.

What a contrast. One guy is a mega bazillionaire who could be the real Art Vanderlay, and the other is an Art Vanderlay wannbe who lives with his parents!

Is he throwing a floppy in the second picture?

No, he's mentally levitating it using his superhuman powers.

MS Word worked on the Mac first. There'd be nothing scandalous about Gates having one in 1983.

I had some computer geeky friends and I remember that photo! Yikes.

It's entirely possible for this to be a December 1983 issue with the MacIntosh TV commercial debuting the following month at the Super bowl in January 1984.

From the properties of the picture:

Bill Gates, CEO of Microsoft, throws a Windows 1.0 floppy disk in his office soon after the product's release. 1985 Bellevue, Washington, USA

Don't be so sure, I think that notebook contains Bush-Guard memos, printed on a daisywheel.

From Slashdot:

Actually, if you look at the EXIF tags inside the JPG files, you will see the following comment:

Bill Gates, CEO of Microsoft, reclines on his desk in his office soon after the release of Windows 1.0. 1985 Bellevue, Washington, USA

And, here is the original image in Corbis [corbis.com].

So, as always, Slashdot is wrong. It is from 1985, not 1983. But, amazingly enough, it actually is Bill Gates, and it is real.
