Agents Surround Van Near White House

WASHINGTON - Secret Service agents surrounded a red minivan a block away from the White House on Tuesday with agents pointing guns at the driver.

The incident occurred along the parade route that President Bush will travel on Thursday after his inauguration.

The mud-caked van stopped within feet of the barricades that block the section of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the Treasury Department and the White House from traffic. At one point, two agents crouched behind a tourist information sign when the driver leaned over to the passenger side of the vehicle.

Authorities Evacuate Part Of Downtown Washington

The area around 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue is being evacuated because of a man who has made a threat.

Police said the man is in a van. Police and the FBI are talking to him.

The Secret Service, D.C. police, the bomb squad and the U.S. Park Police are on the scene.

There appears to be a police standoff in the area of 15th and H St NW. Reports conflict, but one version has it being a standoff between authorities and someone in a van at that location ((a couple of blocks from the White House)).
