Thank you. I was hunting for this. No word at USGS yet, unless I'm looking in the wrong place.

They had a 6.2 there yesterday.

The tsunami that might result from the current 6.8 is 200 times weaker than the Indonesian tsunami at Christmastime.

Is this a 'better safe than sorry' call? Or does it look probable?

I hope this is only a precautionary warning and not a sure thing.

Something odd, though. The story says the tsunami were expected half an hour ago. Shouldn't we already know?

....Good point!

"The sea level has not risen so far ... We are urging local residents to be cautious," Mochimaru Koumatsu, an official in Hachijo town, near where the quake struck, told public broadcaster NHK.

Every couple hundred years or so there is a big bad destructive killer tsunami somewhere in the world. It is now safe to go back to the beach. Watch out for sharks.

Tsunami warnings are issued for possible tsunamis as small as 4 inches. I used to think it was funny. (The idea of a 4 inch tsunami, not tsunamis in general.)
