Tsunami warning issued for Izu Islands after M6.8 quake in Pacific
Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at 15:41 JST TOKYO The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning Wednesday for the Izu island chain south of Tokyo after a quake measuring a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 took place in the Pacific.
The agency expects the height of the possible tsunamis to be some 50 centimeters but warned they may be higher in some places. The 3:11 p.m. quake had its focus east of the Kanto area. (Kyodo News)
Thank you. I was hunting for this. No word at USGS yet, unless I'm looking in the wrong place.
They had a 6.2 there yesterday.
The tsunami that might result from the current 6.8 is 200 times weaker than the Indonesian tsunami at Christmastime.
Is this a 'better safe than sorry' call? Or does it look probable?
anybody have a map?
I have know idea, but the first option is more likely if I had to guess.
TOKYO (Reuters) - A tsunami warning was issued for a group of islands south of Tokyo after a strong earthquake off Japan's eastern coast on Wednesday, public broadcaster NHK said. A magnitude 6.8 earthquake, the focus of which was about 6.2 miles below the ocean floor in the Pacific Ocean struck at around 3:11 p.m. (1:11 a.m. EST), NHK said.
Tsunami around 20 inches high were expected to hit the Izu islands around 3:30 p.m. (1:30 a.m. EST), it said.
the Japanese are probably prepared for a small or moderate tsunami
....lol, you got that one first.
Something odd, though. The story says the tsunami were expected half an hour ago. Shouldn't we already know?
A strong earthquake occurred at 06:11:38 (UTC) on Wednesday, January 19, 2005. The magnitude 6.3 event has been located OFF THE EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN. The hypocentral depth was estimated to be 40 km (25 miles). (This event has been reviewed by a seismologist.)

Every couple hundred years or so there is a big bad destructive killer tsunami somewhere in the world. It is now safe to go back to the beach. Watch out for sharks.
Tsunami warnings are issued for possible tsunamis as small as 4 inches. I used to think it was funny. (The idea of a 4 inch tsunami, not tsunamis in general.)
