poor little mohammad was an orphan-child who after the death of his uncle, lived with beggars on the steps of the temple, who in his youth often suffered from attacks that suggest he suffered from seizures, which were treated by the application of wet, scented cloths. Mohammad's uncle was told, when the boy was still very young, he was destined for 'great things' - as good an explanation for mental illness as was available at the time, IMO. Remember, the ancient Greeks believed the mentally ill were 'touched by the gods'.
The voices mohammad heard in his head disturbed him to such an extent, that he contemplated suicide. Several of his followers became convinced mohammad was jinn-possessed. Raving, barking, MAD.
Believe it or not? Edward, Canon Sell wrote a brilliant, profoundly well-researched biography of the life of the 'prophet' - published in 1913. You will find his sources in both the original Arabic and Greek in the footnotes.

Btw. Each time I mention this, someone with a relative who suffers from schizophrenia gives me a lecture. Don't bother.

Don't worry, I'm not going to "lecture" you, LOL. I believe that some cases, perhaps many, of schizophrenia have demonic origins.
