A former Ku Klux Klansman who once vowed to keep the military segregated is singlehandedly holding up the confirmation of Secretary of State-nominee Condoleezza Rice, the first African-American woman told hold the office.
"Senator Robert Byrd, an outspoken critic of the Iraq war, announced late [Wednesday] that he would not allow the Senate to approve Ms. Rice without a few days of consideration of her lengthy testimony, and at least a token debate on the floor," reports the New York Times.
Sen. Byrd's maneuver came just hours after the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved her nomination by a vote of 16 to 2.

Well, at least he didn't try to hang her from a tree!
Has she checked her front lawn for burning crosses?
There must be a special place in Hell reserved for that man. Sheesh. I can't stand him.
Do you think the grand lizard will wear his sheet and pointy had to the floor?
Come on, Sheets... We need the theater!
Well that should get some attention
I just posted on that thread...I think we can attract some minority voters just based on this assault on Condi.
Token, my man!!
But "Sheets" Byrd is Dem, and they always get way with racism - the foundation of their party.
Someone get this senator a drool bib and a plastic seat cover.
2006 looks better and better.

I'm sure his use of the word "token" was purely coincidental. He probably needs a few days to consider her testimony so he can look up all the big words she used.
If this is true it will be another keg of nails in their coffin.
So says NYSlime

Underscoring the Democrats' dissatisfaction, Senator Robert C. Byrd, an outspoken critic of the decision to go to war, announced late in the day that he would not allow the Senate to approve Ms. Rice without a few days of consideration of her lengthy testimony, and at least a token debate on the floor. His refusal to join in the unanimous consent of all senators for a quick vote effectively torpedoed the administration's hopes to have her nomination approved Thursday.
Yet another lynching for the old Grand Kleagle of teh U.S. Senate. But then, she's uppity anyway. Imagine, one of them as Secretary of State! Im,agine two in a row. I'm amazed it hasn't given Robert KKK Byrd a heart attack by now.
But then, to Byrd and his party, someone like Condi is only 1/3 of a person.
oh, the delicious irony.
