SpongeBob in crosshairs

The New York Times

WASHINGTON — On the heels of electoral victories to bar same-sex marriage, some influential conservative Christian groups are turning their attention to a new target: the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants.

James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, said that SpongeBob's creators have enlisted SpongeBob in a “pro-homosexual video,” in which he appeared with other children's television characters.

The makers of the video, Dobson said, plan to mail it to thousands of elementary schools this spring to promote a “tolerance pledge” that includes tolerance for differences of “sexual identity.”

Eh, thats not right.

Thats what the DU people would say. The conservative tent has always been more diverse and friendly than that. That is one reason people on FR can actually have arguments.

I always get a laugh at stuff like that, especially when the person's signup date is later than mine. >:)

I just don't care for collectivist thought, either economic or cultural.

Ya see, this is where I part ways with some of my conservative christian brothers and sisters. LEAVE SPONGEBOB ALONE. He is harmless and you look like idiotic bullies when you attack a CARTOON!

I don't equate cultural choices with inalienable rights. I must have missed the natural right to child pornography in Locke's philosophy.

Hey, I'm on your side.

I'm just pointing out the nature of humor. If we were all saints there wouldn't be much to laugh at. Thus homosexuality seems like fair game as a subject of humor.

P.S. Do you think Sandy's gay?

Don't you dare say that about a fellow Texan.

But not when it comes to our children. I guess I am easily angered by this stuff - but I am just sick and tired of the left's attempt to use child characters for their evil and sick purposes. We have to be vigilant - there was a time when I could laugh but not anymore - sorry if I came down too hard on ya.

Teaching a kid not to beat up people can be done without teaching (brainwashing)them that homosexual behavior is normal. In fact beating up people has nothing to do with anal sex or putting on condoms.

OK, you've watched it.

What's a "Spongebob"

I've got 3 grandkids and never heard of it (him?)

And I must have missed where thinking one sees odd subliminal messages in a cartoon equals "child pornography".

Dobson uses the word "family" like the Clintons use "for the children", as cover for an anti-liberty agenda.

You nailed it. Whenever I hear anyone utter either "for the children" or "for the family" I automatically know that its a control freak that can't get their ideas across by reason and therefore have to pander to emotion.

Maybe you haven't been paying attention. The people here don't have a problem with Spongebob. The problem is with this group that is using spongebob and other popular children's cartoon characters in a program designed to encourage acceptance (actually advocacy) of the homosexual lifestyle.

For too long conservatives have kept quiet because of the leftest vile attack and we didnt want to be called names - no more - time to bring it on - Im confident in my values - I believe all are equal but not all actions are - can the left make the same claim?

Respectfully, that is just your idea of what a conservative is. Many conservatives don't share the "morality police" aspect of other conservatives.

Again I say this respectfully, but if the GOP adopts the a morality jihad agenda, then the party will get about 20% of the vote rather than hovering around 50%. Quayle tried this approach and we got eight years of Clinton as a result.

Cartoons are entertainment shouldn't be considered a teaching vehicle. If parents don't think that certain entertainment shows are inappropriate then they shouldn't allow their children to watch them.

I can't believe anyone would provide any cover for the anti-family movement. There is no room for compromise on this one. I bet some DU loonies are on this thread as trolls. Liberals are like that.

Subversive.

I once had a large gay following. But I ducked into an alleyway and lost him.

So people who warn of proven dangers that you personally embrace are alarmists.

In what other was are you like Ted Kennedy?
