SpongeBob in crosshairs

The New York Times

WASHINGTON — On the heels of electoral victories to bar same-sex marriage, some influential conservative Christian groups are turning their attention to a new target: the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants.

James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, said that SpongeBob's creators have enlisted SpongeBob in a “pro-homosexual video,” in which he appeared with other children's television characters.

The makers of the video, Dobson said, plan to mail it to thousands of elementary schools this spring to promote a “tolerance pledge” that includes tolerance for differences of “sexual identity.”

This brings to mind the Death Camp of Tolerance episode of South Park.

The parents send their boys to the Museum of Tolerance because they need to be tolerant of their gay teacher.

Tunnel of Prejudice in the Museum of Tolerance

Then the parents send their boys to Tolerance Camp, so they can accept people of all colors and sexual preferences.

Finger-painting at the Tolerance Camp

And of course Mr. Garrison trying to get fired for being gay.

I have only seen one episode of SpongeBob, and in it, he (or one of his sidekicks) decides he is going to wear a bra, because the girls do it, why can't he? Seriously, he wears a bra on the outside of his clothes! How am I supposed to explain that one to my kid? And why should I have to?

Do you let them watch the crossdressing Bugs Bunny?

Parents need to get involved and get homos out of the classroom. These radical activists are subversive and act with malice aforethought in their deliberate indoctrination strategies.

After we defeat OBL at al, I have a "modest proposal" of creating a grand coalition of the willing to get rid of this scourge from society. Conservative Libertarians ROCK yet left-wing "Libertarians" are complete junk and add zero value to the Nation. Once again, I believe that Freerepublic has been infiltrated by left-wing subversive radical elements in some cases... Look at some of the loonie liberal ideas espoused on this most excellent forum....

Our beloved Constitution protects free Speech (that may mean speaking one's mind...); the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (etc) [RKBA], yet I completely fail to see where the Constitution protects radical homo groups from infiltrating public institutions, oftentimes at TAXPAYER expense.

This phenomenon is coercion, not freedom.

When taxpayer money is on the line, it is the Citizen's right to carefully monitor where it goes and make damn sure it does not end up in the hands of controversial, radical groups that seek to hijack public institutions with their own subversive agendas.

What these types do on their own time is their business (classical Libertarian), what they attempt to "achieve" on public time or at taxpayer expense is all of our business.

Your comments are VERY unappreciated. Dr. Dobson is a godly, moral man -- and the type of man who made this nation great. He campaigned for John Thune 3X against Daschle. Can I ask what you did to help our cause??

"protecting kids" ....

You nailed it RE protecting kids. I firmly believe that we must be vigilant and alert at all times when it some to protecting the little tykes!

We must all monitor and police all activities that pertain to our little ones and keep them free from all harm. [No regrets]

I encourage you in your attitude.

FYI: those that "go after" our POTUS have "questionable" motives and make me "upset" also ...

The video can be seen in its entirety at MSNBC.com. There's nothing in it that any reasonable person could identify as promoting ANY form of sexual behavior. As to the supplementary materials referred to or offered on the WE ARE FAMILY website, advocating tolerance is NOT the same thing as advocating homosexuality. Dr. Dobson stands to lose more adherents than he might gain when his spokespeople defend him thus: "We see the video as an insidious means by which the organization is manipulating and potentially brainwashing kids."
Come on! Aren't there any REAL issues worthy of the attention of Dr. Dobson and Focus on the Family?

..."Stealth" campaign to promote acceptance and tolerance of homosexulaity to grade school and pre-school aged children across North America and beyond!!

This stealth was what bothered Dr. Dobson. On Hannity, he said his concern were those websites that led to an oath to tolerate homosexual lifestyles.

IMHO, Dr. Dobson does a great service to warn parents and he gets vilified in the press, which is the media's method to discredit anyone who disagrees with the homosexual agenda.

Ha, I'm sure some folks would like us to believe that.

The organization's website has teachers material that includes the "homosexism" lesson plan.

This is just the jingle (which is a "gay" disco song).

The We Are Family Foundation is pleased to provide Tolerance.org's Declaration of Tolerance, part of the Southern Poverty Law Center's National Campaign for Tolerance

Tolerance is a personal decision that comes from a belief that every person is a treasure. I believe that America's diversity is its strength. I also recognize that ignorance, insensitivity and bigotry can turn that diversity into a source of prejudice and discrimination.

To help keep diversity a wellspring of strength and make America a better place for all, I pledge to have respect for people whose abilities, beliefs, culture, race, sexual identity or other characteristics are different from my own.

VERY interesting that the link to the Teacher's playbook page has been taken offline:

UNFORTUNATELY for them, I cut and pasted the text to another thread. WHAT do they have to hide? Hmmmm?

SpongeBob, Barney promote 'gay tolerance (FedEx to Sponsor in Gov't Schools): POST #294

Animal Diversity and Geography
CIRCUSWORKS® educational program has three units of study to help you and your students learn more about the world's geography and the diversity of animals found on the planet. Each lesson requires few or no additional materials, and some have PDF format activity sheets for you to print out and distribute to your students.

I Spy Sexism
Dust off your spectacles, binoculars, or magnifying glass; it's time to lend your 20/20 to the fight against sexism, racism, and homophobia in your community. It's Third Wave's I Spy Sexism campaign.
http://www.thirdwavefoundation.org/programs/i_spy_sexism.html

As a member or supporter of Third Wave, you are joining our commitment to act out against organizations, businesses, and people who discriminate on the basis of gender, race or sexual orientation. (Ignorance is ignorance, no matter what the logic, or lack thereof.) Often it's the unjust behavior right under your nose that's the hardest to identify and rectify. It's easy to get used to the way things have been done since the day we were born. And discriminatory practices can come to seem almost natural. For instance, most of us have probably been conditioned to believe that women and girls just aren't as good at math or science.

The first step in bringing about change is to open our eyes to the day-to-day happenings around us. The I SPY SEXISM campaign will help you identify and take action quickly and effectively. Plus, you'll be getting good practice adding your voice, loud and clear, to the chorus of your community.

Take Note

The first step is to sit up and take notice of what's going on around you. Have a look at these questions and see if any of them sound all too familiar:

How often do the movies you see have women as the central characters?

How many of the movies you see were directed by a woman?

How many of the elected officials in your city are openly gay? State? Federal?

How many people of color serve as judges in your local judicial system? State? Federal?

In your favorite general-interest magazines, how many articles are written by women? How many are about women/people of color/lesbian and gay people?

Which news stories get front-page coverage in your daily paper?

Do gay teenagers socialize openly and safely at local school-wide events?

How many women's professional sporting events are broadcast by the major networks?

As a woman, can you walk home alone at night in your neighborhood without being nervous?

Does your local newsstand carry lesbian and gay magazines?

How many average-size or heavy women appear on your favorite sit-coms? Are they ever the central characters?

How many women artists are covered in your art history classes?

How much street crime is reported on your local news? By comparison, how much corporate/white collar crime is reported on your local news?

How many local school principals (or chancellors or presidents) are women? How many are men? Compare that to the teacher female/male ratio?
These are just a few of the ways that sexism, racism, and homophobia are built into the culture we live in. No doubt, you can think of dozens more. In order to make change, we have to identify these practices and let it be known that we think it's lousy. So keep your eyes peeled. Carry a notebook and jot down incidents that strike you as unfair. Ask the people involved for their names, so they know you are watching. Talk to your friends. Ask them if they've ever witnessed similar behavior. Ask your teachers what they think of it? Let them know what you think.

Sound Off

Once you recognize unfair behavior for what it is, the next step is to let your feelings be known. You can download postcards that will help you get the word out.

First and most important, send a card to the wrongdoer. Let him or her or it know that you are watching and that you will continue to watch until the situation changes.

Send a card to a member of the media (newspapers, TV news programs, magazines, web sites). These are open channels you can use to get your message to people who share your views and want to help you make change.

Send a card to your elected officials (your Senator, the President of the United States or of the school board, or your Mayor). Their job is to listen to your concerns and act on them. If they don't respond to one postcard, get others to send more.

Send a card to Third Wave. We are a resource for you. We can put you in touch with others, near and far, who may be encountering the same situations. Third Wave will also document what you are doing and how you are working to change it.

And finally, send a card to a family member or friend. Although you may not talk much about it, you'll be amazed to find that people close to you often have the same concerns about unjust activities in your community. By sending them word of your own work in writing you will encourage and inspire them to take actions of their own.

That's it. It's that easy. And that's what we call MOVEMENT.

Also you "should not" confuse this asexual children's organization with this prohomosexual organization < /sarcasm >

"Reagan basically blew off the whole "moral majority" agenda, and there's no doubt that "indecency" was far more accepted in 1988 than it was in 1979, particularly in broadcasting. His results speak for themselves."

Yeah right - like when Reagan actually wrote an essay while president condeming abortion and spoke as president to the Christian media organizations. Reagan a cultural liberal??? The GOP lost in 92 and 96 because conservative christians were not organized and did not have a voice LIKE they do now. The internet has given rise to a new media and we are not spoonfed by the media conglomerates on what is proper and that we have a minority opinion.

Give me a break the GOP loss in 92 and 96? - Bush Sr. and Dole are not what I consider culturally conservative both are elitests who find more satisfaction in pleasing NYT than their electorate. There are many factors which make up the voting electorate - my point was that without cultural conservatives (more than any other group) Bush Jr would not have been elected. The other groups that you mentioned would have voted for Bush regardless - you even go as far as to say so - cultural conservatives have played a major role in electing or electing by default. Keyes

In addition, I find it fascinating that not only has WAFF threatened a lawsuit against AFA but has also REMOVED most of the offensive pro-gay pages from its site, especially the ones that AFA has specifically referenced (including #'s 1, 3 & 4 from my earlier post). Is this an attempt at making peace or an attempt at removing evidence?? (for more info on this see: http://www.earnedmedia.org/sbm0125.htm )
