WILMINGTON - Eight illegal immigrants from Honduras have pleaded guilty to federal charges related to a multistate scheme to steal and resell baby formula and over-the-counter drugs.

Officials say the products are worth over $2.5 million.

The defendants admitted in federal court in Wilmington Tuesday to conspiring and to aiding and abetting the transport of stolen baby formula across state lines. They will be sentenced April 25.

Federal prosecutors say shoplifters targeted more than 50 retail outlets beginning in September 2003 and ending in August 2004. More than 121 pallets of baby formula were prepared for shipment out of state, often to Columbus, Ohio, and Milwaukee.

Several of these defendants were arrested in August after federal agents seized a truckload of stolen baby formula and over-the-counter medications at a shipping terminal in Greensboro
