It wasn't only the slogans put out by NARAL and NOW, the entertainment media was complicit in it, too. It began in the early 70's with the lead character, played by Bea Arthur, on the TV show "Maude" getting an abortion, and then other shows followed suit. If the characters didn't get abortions, they sure talked about it in favorable terms and portrayed anyone who disagreed as some religious lunatic.

Hopefully this is changing.
There's a show on NBC called "American Dreams" and it's set in the 60s. Anyways, a young Marine's fiancee got pregnant shortly before he went to Vietnam and she was pressured very heavily by her parents to go out of state to get an abortion. She refused to kill her baby (and they used the term "baby" instead of any of the pretty euphamisms), and her fiance's family took her in. She had the child after essentially being disowned by her parents for not having an abortion. I think it was the most anti-abortion thing I've ever seen on a mainstream television program, and was quite refreshing.
