Chalk up another benefit for a drink a day.
That moderate alcohol consumption may be beneficial to the heart is widely known. But a study published in today's New England Journal of Medicine found that consuming a small amount of alcohol -- a drink per day or less -- can help prevent cognitive decline in women as they age.
An accompanying editorial in the journal called the study a "welcome" provider of clues about the prevention of cognitive decline.
The study, led by researchers from Harvard Medical School, Harvard Public Health and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, compared the cognitive functions in more than 11,000 nurses with varying drinking regimens.
Study participants were divided into three groups: those that drank one to 14.9 grams of alcohol a day, or the equivalent of a glass of wine, a cocktail or a can of beer. A second group consumed up to double that amount. The third didn't drink at all. Cognitive tests were performed on the three groups in 1999 and 2001. For comparison purposes, researchers used the mean score of each group for both years. The women in the study were age 70 to 81 -- a time when memory and other cognitive skills start to deteriorate for many people.
