AN EARTHQUAKE measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale shook the southern Philippines before dawn Saturday but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, authorities said.
The quake, which was tectonic in origin, struck at 1:54 am (1854 GMT Friday) with an epicenter about 85 kilometers (53 miles) south of the southern city of General Santos, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.
Although about five quakes hit the Philippines every day, few if any are felt and only three major, destructive tremors have been recorded in more than 30 years, the institute has said.
Please take care. Be safe.
