TORY leader Michael Howard yesterday pledged the toughest ever crackdown on immigrants saying Britain is full.
He set the battleground for the election by promising a strict limit on the number of foreign settlers.
Only those with skills needed to run key public services will be let in.
Asylum-seekers will be turned away by squads of armed security guards on 24-hour patrol at ports and airports.
And up to 250,000 bogus refugees already living here illegally will be booted out.
Mr Howard is to give details of his plans to tighten Britains soft-touch borders in a hard-hitting speech today.
He will say: Most people would agree Britain has reached a turning point. They know that our communities cannot successfully absorb newcomers at todays pace.
But Tony Blair has turned a blind eye to their concerns. We need a government that stops talking about this issue and acts.
Mr Howard warned yesterday that without urgent action five million immigrants would settle in Britain over the next 30 years.
The Tory boss who comes from an immigrant family said: Some people say this is racist. Its not, its common sense.
If the Tories win the election, they will introduce tough quotas on the granting of work permits.
Would-be immigrants will have to prove they have existing family ties to Britain plus the right age, skills and qualifications we need.
Tories will also scrap the right of immigrants to bring husbands and wives to the UK to join them.
ALL asylum seekers will be turned away to halt the flood of up to 80,000 who abuse the system each year.
Instead, around 15,000 genuine refugees will be accepted from United Nations camps.
Mr Howard told GMTV yesterday: The people who claim asylum now are those who can afford to pay the people smugglers.
Only two out of ten people who come to this country to claim asylum are granted it. The rest are not genuine and that is what we want to stop.
Last night the Government was drawing up its own action plan to outflank the Tories.
Home Office minister Hazel Blears admitted there were legitimate concerns over immigration.
But she claimed Tory pledges to cut taxes by £35billion meant they could not afford Mr Howards plans.
Hey! I LIKE this!
The right just needs to set some sensible policies... and stick to their guns... the electorate will come around. No more wavering and wobbling.
The good thing is that it seems like Blair agrees with much of this. The liberal democrats are having a hissy fit :-)
That said, "Instead, around 15,000 genuine refugees will be accepted from United Nations camps. "
Trust the UN?
Ansar al Islam leader Mullah Krekar came to Norway as a UN quota refugee.
Even better!!
"they have water between them and the invaders."
We do too, not Mexico I realize, or by extension South America, but come here to NJ, we are awash in foreigners and they are not Mexican. Most are Muslim terrorists it seems. The airports are borders too.
Bloddy well said, Gov'nor!
Until they dug the Frog Pipe !
Good luck and cheers.
I'll believe it when we see it. The PC left in the UK will never permit it.
It may be to late for Britian already judging by what I saw more than 20 years ago when I visited relatives there....
