I wanted HIV says star
The Sun ^ | 24/01/05 | unattributed

Posted on 01/24/2005 1:30:52 AM PST by flitton

POP star Andy Bell says he always WANTED to be HIV positive. The gay Erasure singer, 40, revealed he is HIV positive last month — six years after diagnosis.

And in a new interview he says: “You are going to think this strange, but I wanted to be HIV positive. I thought HIV was a touchstone of being gay.

“But I’m a fighter. They will have to take me from this world kicking and screaming.”

Bandmate Vince Clarke, 44, insisted Bell’s diagnosis did not change anything. He said: “I had no fear this was the end.

“I have other friends in similar situations, and with the development of maintenance drugs, it wasn’t a death sentence.”

Announcing he was HIV positive, Bell said: “My life expectancy should be the same as anyone else, so there is no need to panic.”

Erasure, who topped the charts in the ’80s and ’90s, recently reached No4 with single Breathe.

Truly bizarre thinking. The mind is a very powerful thing. Thought often precedes action. This individual's self-fulfilling prophecy seems to have come true. Sad story.

Andy Bell's just slightly older than I am. Reading what he said makes me wonder how he managed to survive to the age of forty being a complete and utter moron.

I have read about bug chasing but just from the media it's difficult to know if it's widespread or if it's just journalists blowing up the stories of a few people into a trend. This guy had, on the surface, most of what anyone could want, money, achievements, a satisfying career, friends etc and yet still didn't feel like part of a wider community. It's as if being in the gay community wasn't enough so he came up with an idea of being somehow 'ultra gay' by having HIV. I agree, very sad.

Other people might think it strange, but not me. I am a born-and-raised San Franciscan, and have seen people with your warped outlook up close for two decades now.

I thought HIV was a touchstone of being gay.

No, it's a touchstone of being promiscuous and hedonistic.

“But I’m a fighter. They will have to take me from this world kicking and screaming.”

Not many people who develop AIDS after contracting HIV have the strength to kick, but they do plenty of screaming.

Mo, Andy Bell probably did, but that quote came from Vince Clarke, who's the keyboardist/composer for Erasure and used to be with Depeche Mode. Vince probably hasn't signed his own death certificate...well, unless he's been sleeping with Andy. Who knows?

*sigh*

Well ma'am, you might panic when your eyes melt into the back of your head or some usually benign virus eats your brain away.

What an utter and complete horror these people are!

It's like some sort of twlight zone freak show where one contestant tries to outdo the next.

I'm not kidding, this strikew me as horrific.

Gay pride is all about "look at me". Perhaps if they didn't need to rebel against their parents they would not find themselves in this situation.

More condoms in schools is NOT the answer to this problem.

They know about condoms, thankyouverymuch.

Condoms in schools is just to get society to concede the issue of teen sex.

[sarcasm]
Homosexuality is not a mental illness, homosexuals are just born that way. There is no normal and abnormal. It is all relative.
[/sarcasm]

The American Psychiatric Assocation, since a ruling in the early 1970's, no longer classifies Homosexuality as a pathology or illness.

This guys statement fly directly in the face of this ruling.

Couple more Andy Bell (of Erasure) pics. BTW, I am not any kind of Erasure fan; I just know what they look like. He's on the right with the overalls in the second pic. That picture is also from when the group first started up -- while the first picture is much more recent.

“But I’m a fighter. They will have to take me from this world kicking and screaming.”

I really don't know who this character is but I was struck by these statements. Notice how he suggests "they" will "have to take me" and how he is a "fighter". Everything is referred to as external to him cancelling out the element of personal responsibility in this situation. HIV has "happened" to him, an ugly scheme hatched out by evil people to be inflicted on poor, passive victims like homosexuals. BARF.

I was thinking the same thing. The problem with the HIV-maintenance drugs is that they will delay his inevitable demise, and he will look apparently healthy for a longer period of time, but, in the meantime, he's probably still doing what got him sick in the first place and thus spreading it to others. That's why there's no way to get a handle on HIV -- either leave them to their fate and they'll look sicker and die quicker (which is not going to happen) or find a cure.

It seems that homosexuals are the most disease-ridden creatures on the planet, If it isn't AIDS, it's another venereal disease such gonorrhea or syphilis. It it isn't VD, it's another lifestyle-related disease such as colon cancer. If it isn't that, homsexuals are noted for their heavy drinking drug usage, smoking and, on top of that, suicide. It's not surprising that their life-expectency is a mere 42 years in this country, lower than a baby born in Afghanistan.

Riiiight. And with his 'status', he will have easy access to the best, most up to the date treatments and most expensive medicines driving up health costs for the rest of us who don't infect ourselves, if we're even lucky enough to have insurance for our regular needs. Gee, what a hero he is.

And the left complains about the cost of medical care for smokers and the obese. Deliberately infecting yourself as a rite of passage is just as irresponsible.

Why do we have to pay for him, too, if the smokers and obese get railed?
