Mozilla Firefox = resource hog?
Posted on 01/24/2005 12:54:56 PM PST by fo0hzy
I've been running Firefox for almost two months now... but just a few minutes ago I went to shut down a stubborn program via CTRL ALT DELETE... and after a reboot, I went to check the running processes one more time (did I mention it was stubborn?), and noticed this:
Is this normal? I have a couple of Firefox add-ons (weather, FTP, search preview), but I shouldn't think those would affect the normal Google page.

That's not normal. Base Firefox resource usage should be around 7MB of memory.

I have 12 tabs open and it is only hitting 73Mb. I don't have a sinlge IE window open and it is sitting at 36Mb.
Try and clear your cache. Set it to delete files on exit. Useless clutter.

Weather?
Some weather programs are considered spyware.

Geez! Either you've got about ten separate windows open at once, or those plug-ins are more of a drain than you thought.
Right now I'm running Firefox steady at 23 Mb. Just a few minutes ago when I was running three different instances of it, it was still only 40 Mb total.

My Firefix on XP Professional is stting at 47MB. When I had two windows open it was at 50MB. Perhaps you have multiple/many windwos and or tabs open?

The explorer you see in the task list is not IE. explorer.exe is the Windows Program Manager. It manages the Windows Graphical Shell including the Start menu, taskbar, desktop, and File Manager. By removing this process the graphical interface for Windows will disappear.

Would almost guarentee that is the culprit. The weather plugin could also be spyware as stated earlier.
As a last resort you could reinstall without these plugins and see where it is sitting then.

Silly me, I guess I shoulda noticed the difference between the IEXPLORE.exe and explorer.exe threads. (/sarcasm)
I know exactly which one I'm talking about. explorer.exe is only running at about 18Mb.

That 30,544 number I cited earlier included my weather extension. [It doesn't spy, by the way.] I also have several other extensions.

Okay, I'm gonna remove that just to check... but it was on the official Mozilla site as one of the Firefox plugins.
