Thanks as always for the ping.
It's news to me that Mark is not Jewish.
That's what I get for assuming from names.
But he likes show tunes as well, and he's not gay ...

I think he's mentioned before that his name is Dutch or Flemish and, being born and raised in Quebec, part of his ancestry may also be French. Even if his name didn't have a faintly Semitic flavor, his writing style (always make them laugh and always leave a bruise) and sense of humor are way too clever for your average gentile. The Jewish press, soon after 9/11, commented that Americans are the new Jews. Insightful and spot on.

I read his biography somewhere and it had him listed as Jewish and Anglican.
I think he probably had a Jewish father or grandfather and in Jewish law, connection descends from the maternal line.
So, to Jews he is not Jewish, but to anyone wishing to point a finger they will use Hitler's old ploy of going back and looking for that drop of Jewish blood.

Never assume.... a person's name isn't necessarily a giveaway to their real identity. It still makes no difference to anti-Semites that Mark Steyn isn't Jewish or would necessarily have issued the Balfour Declaration. He's against them and in their book, that's as good as being a Jew by adoption. Steyn might as well wear the slur with pride.
