Right after Chad Lewis caught that touchdown pass with about four minutes to go, the touchdown that cemented the victory and ensured the Philadelphia Eagles would be in the Super Bowl, some guy in the stands joyfully held up a sign that said, "We're Going To Jacksonville."
And I thought: What on earth is second prize? You have to build there?
How did Jacksonville get the Super Bowl? What, Tuscaloosa was booked?
If going to Jacksonville for a week is the reward New England and Philadelphia get for being the best teams in the NFL this year, Peyton Manning ought to be happy he didn't get there. Imagine how Manning would have felt, having to play all year in Indianapolis, and then landing in Jacksonville? Which gods would he have offended to get that killer quinella?
The NFL must see itself as handing out some sort of charity when it awards the Super Bowl to any place other than New Orleans, Miami and Southern California. Because, believe me, nobody wants the game to be anywhere but there. So when the NFL insists on putting it in outposts like Detroit, Houston or Minneapolis, people ask, "Are you guys nuts?" But when you pick Jacksonville, people are agape and say, "Who in Jacksonville has a photo of Tagliabue with a goat?"

Wah wah wah. Sportswriters are just about the most spoiled people on earth. I can't wait to see them whine about Detroit next year. Poor babies.

Jacksonville's a great place. I had the best seafood ever in a little place down there called Clark's Fish Camp, down at the end of some dirt road in a suburb, I couldn't find the place again if my life depended on it. It was the kind of place that only the locals knew about, and man, was that food GOOD!

Kornheiser is a fool. I grew up in Jax and hope to retire there. It's a helluva town - a lot nicer than DC, for sure!

So I guess when the Super Bowl was in Atlanta that it wasn't a success. I seem to remember it being quite successful and profitable.

I mean, really, does he think life ends at the edge of Manhatten? That 100,000 people in the US (other than him) would not care about what CITY the Superbowl is in, but rather, WHO is playing init and what goes on around the event?
The seafood in Jax is outstanding. Try some gator tail the next time you're there...mmmmmmmm!
Kornheiser is one of the funnier sportswriters, and one should take anything he says about Jacksonville or any other Super Bowl city with not a grain of salt, but a whole box of it.
I've lived in Jacksonville, and it is a quaint mixture of up and coming metropolitan, darkest/dangerous ghettoes anywhere (Northside and Springfield areas), gay trendy wannabe Greenwich Village (Riverside), and trailer parks catering to every persuasion, from classic/traditional white-trash, to sparkling pre-manufactured Fleetwood homes for assistant head tellers on their way up.
Why do you think that 'COPS' picks Jacksonville so often as the subject of their shows?
Make no mistake, it's a marvelous city, in fact Jacksonville is the LARGEST city in America, based upon land mass, and the people there are the nicest you'll ever meet, and on top of that: they ARE an NFL city, with their own team, (need I remind anybody?) the Jacksonville Jaquars.
Tony Kornheiser is OK.
Kornheiser is your standard issue liberal New York Jewish sportswriter. If it isn't from the Northeast, it sucks.
Next time try Whitey's Fish Camp on C. R. 220 in Clay County.
It sits on Swimming Pen Creek and the seafood is excellent.

To be fair to Mr. Kornheiser, some parts of Jacksonville do smell badly. It is not nearly so pungent as it was 30 years ago. Jacksonville has worked very hard at smell reduction.
Jacksonville is a working town and we had a paper mill in the northern part of the county that was a major player in the aroma department.
Unfortunately, I am afraid a whole lot of people coming in for the Super Bowl are going to experience what a nice place this is to live and they are going to move here and also tell their friends.
I wish they would just come, drop their money and go home.
My old hometown says "Don't come if you don't like us and we won't kill you.".........
