From Psychology Today magazine (astonishingly enough):
Bursting the Self-Esteem Bubble
By David Dent

People with high self-esteem may be more of a threat to society than those with a lower sense of self-worth, according to a controversial 100-page report. Nicholas Emler, Ph.D., a social psychologist at the London School of Economics, found that people with high self-esteem are more likely to be racist, violent and criminal. Low self-esteem increases the risk of eating disorders, suicide and depression, but it is not a factor in delinquency or substance abuse, according to Emler. The study was commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the United Kingdom's largest think tank, and is distributed by York Publishing Services.

Emler reviewed seminal research on self-esteem as well as hundreds of study abstracts before concluding that genes are more important than parenting or environment and low self-esteem is not a risk factor for poor academic performance. Black teenagers voiced higher self-esteem than whites, a difference Emler attributes in part to presentation.

"Black teens are willing to say things about themselves that others may not feel comfortable saying," maintains Emler, who also found that people with high self-esteem may have an unrealistic sense of themselves. "They expect to do well at things, discount failure and feel beyond reproach."

High self-esteem seems most dangerous when it colors racial and ethnic tolerance. "People with incredibly positive views of themselves feel anybody who differs from them is an insult," explains Emler. "They just don't like people who are different."

These pitfalls have yet to curb the booming self-help industry. More than 3,000 book titles on the Barnes & Noble Web site contain the term "self-esteem."

Somebody needs to insure that Linda Newman reads this.

This statement is nonsense, and the only reasonable explanation is that the "educator" in question wants to badmouth the President's policies. I have experience in such matters (actually, I won my region's spelling bee three years running as a youth and each time was denied the chance to go to the national competition because of my liberal local paper's bias - but that's a story for another time) and can definitively state that the vast majority of those who lost at the school level didn't care all that much. Actually, many of those who lost at the regional level didn't care all that much. Most parents cared much more than most of the students, and the only reason an educator would care would be if he/she could make public his/her hatred of the current administration.

"You have to build positive self-esteem for all kids, so they believe they're all winners,"

Yeah, why should a kid strive to exceed? This will make for a great future.....NOT

Thanks to a spelling bee, I will NEVER, EVER spell S-E-P-A-R-A-T-E wrong again!

I would venture to guess that some wacko liberal school administrators are attempting to make President Bush's No Child Left Behind Act look ridiculous. It was NEVER meant to exclude spelling bees or any other form of academic challenge.

I learned a very good life lesson in a spelling bee in middle school. I lost. I was the smartest kid in the class and I blew it. It took me down a peg, showed me that just being smart wasn't enough--I had to make good--and that there were other kids with talent who could beat me on any given day.

I would say that was a more valuable lesson than the spelling of any word, or maybe even winning!

Linda Newman, assistant superintendent of schools in Lincoln, R.I., is an idiot who has no business being anywhere near children in need of an education. She is the antithesis of education.

It seems similar to the schools that try to rid themselves of competitive sports because they're bad for the self esteem of kids when they don't win, and not everyone gets to win. Atlas Shrugged.

And what about when these "winners only" kids, all of them not allowed to grow through failure, are grown and go out into the world looking for a job. Two or three are vying for the one job which only one or none can win. The losers haven't learned how to handle losing, rejection and go off with an attitude that will not serve them well the next time. If there is a next time. What about that!

The real challenge here, is that are the parents going to let the school get away with this? They need to rise up against these idiots and put them back in their place. I think we all need to email that woman, too.

Haven't you heard...there are sports programs that are "scoreless" They just play without keeping score, that way nobody wins & nobody loses...it's all just "fun" and nobody gets their feelings hurt. You know just like in realy life...
