ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Two computer disks that supposedly disappeared last summer, prompting a virtual shutdown of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, in fact never existed, according to a report released Friday.
In a harshly worded review that described severe security weaknesses at the nuclear laboratory, the U.S. Energy Department concluded that bar codes were recorded for the disks but that the disks themselves were never created. A separate FBI investigation supported that finding, according to the report.
The weaknesses revealed by this incident are severe and must be corrected, said the report.
As punishment for the problems, the Energy Department slashed the management fee it paid to the University of California for running the laboratory by two-thirds. Out of a possible $8.7 million, the university will get only $2.9 million; it is the largest fee reduction ever imposed on a national laboratory.

Thank God....
I wonder if the people who were fired for this will be rehired
Unlikely IF they were in any way involved with administering the security system. And since everybody with a security clearance (especially at those levels) has certain responsibilities...
The missing discs incident came after the missing (and then mysteriously found) removable hard drive with nuclear weapon data incident. And dare I mention a certain Mr. Wen Ho Lee? (Royally bungling the investigation and mistreating Mr. Lee in confinement does not necessarily equal innocence.)
Remember this excuse when the IRS insists you have records they want: "They never existed...". I'm sure they'd believe you.
I think they said that at the time.
LOL. This is their story and they're sticking to it.
Ping
My Dog ate my Computer disk........
So that's their story now......Soon, Bergler's trousergate documents will be found never to have existed.
That's their story and they're going to stick with it.
Unless it was swamp gas or a weather balloon or...
Security is what never existed.
"You know that penis I supposedly put in Monica Lewinsky? It never existed."
Boy, am *I* ever a thread-killer.
Doubt it. If they didn't follow procedures, they ought to stay canned.
Yah thats the ticket. They never existed.
Well thats my story and I'm stickin to it.........
