I agree, bolster INS and you will get more return for your tax-payer dollar. We know what illegal immigration's social costs are. That money could be put to much better use than providing social services and education for the illegal population in "our" country. Mr. President make the immigrant fit the law. Do not make the law fit the immigrant.

Well, of course he has to collect more tax, he intends all of the criminal aliens to be able to collect SSI and welfare when they are not taking jobs illegally at less than minimum wages. He has to make the citizens pay for the criminals.

I must say I voted for him but if I had a real choice I would have voted differently. As one said the other day, voting for the lesser of two evils is still voting for evil.

"Enforcement more than pays for itself,"

I had a combined business/personal audit in 1996. Both returns, side by side, line for line. They extracted an additional $1200. in taxes, after 3 - 6 hour days with my accountant. No penalties, or interest was charged, because IRS considered it an "honest" mistake. My accountant charged me $3800. for his time.

If enforcement pays for itself, it depends on who is paying. In this case, near as I can tell, everybody lost. Even my accountant, who had to find another client.

I wonder if there will ever again be one thread on FR that isn't turned into an immigration thread.

I doubt it. You see this place is just a relection of the "national attitude" towards illegal immigration. This issue is coming to the front and if I were an illegal in this country I would be waiting for the results with apprehension. In short the legal citizens in this country are getting very, very, angry about illegal immigration. I really don't think you have seen anything yet.

Hmmm. Good question. There's a new thread today about Dolly Parton doing a CD for a homosexual group. I am thinking that could not be turned into an immigration thread. LOL.

But under a national sales tax the federal tax collectors would deal only with the states, who would be responsible for managing the sales tax system.

I think you need to read the bill some more, because that ain't exactly what's in it.

There would no longer be any declaration of income with the IRS, there would no longer be any tax returns.

This is not true at all. Social Security will still be based on income, and people must report it (but now people have motivation to lie about having more income). And people still need to register with the federal tax collectors if they want to recieve their monthly tax rebate check. A sales tax system once implemented will not be as easy as it sounds.

My father retired in 1994 after 41 years as a revenue officer with the IRS. I remember him telling me two things: 1) That there were enough unpaid taxes owed to the government to balance the budget, but that the IRS did not have enough manpower to collect these unpaid taxes; and 2) That every dollar spent by the IRS on salaries was returned, on average, tenfold in collected taxes. However, due to political reasons, the IRS could not hire more agents (at reelection time, no congressman wants to have voted to have increased the size of the IRS).
I'm all for lower taxes for all, but I believe the first step in tax reduction and reform is to get the people who owe back taxes to pay what they owe! I'm all with GWB on this one. Of course, like any government agency, the IRS has its problems, but that is for another thread...

OH I beg to differ. I am at ground zero when it comes to illegal immigration. Colorado has been over-run. This is no secret. Tancredo comes from Colorado. We have had illegal immigrants demand in-state tuition here. Give me a break. Do you want photos from the local emergency room on a Saturday night? Who do you think pays the bill? You speak like 1. an illegal immigrant 2. someone who promotes open borders. 3. a liberal

Admittedly there weren't any. I was being somewhat dramatic/sarcastic since I'm a big Fair Tax advocate. And there's a lot of talk about repealing the 16th Amendment. But there has been strong talk about tax reform, and this seems to fly in the face of that. I mean $500,000,000 is a lot of coin that could most certainly be spent on better things (like giving it back to me) than the guvmint stealing our money at the point of a gun.

Signed,

Bitter about quarterlies

Is that the best you've got? You sound ill-informed with nothing but boilerplate platitudes to respond with.

Is it NOT a "national attitude." It's not the Number One issue with people who don't have tunnel vision.

TAX CRIMES

Employers who aid or abet the preparation of false tax returns by failing to pay income or Social Security taxes for illegal alien employees, or who knowingly make payments using false names or Social Security numbers, are subject to IRS criminal and civil sanctions. U.S. nationals who have suffered intentional discrimination because of citizenship or national origin by an employer with more than three employees may file a complaint within 180 days of the discriminatory act with the Special Counsel for Immigration-Related Unfair Employment Practices, U.S. Department of Justice.

In additon to the federal statutes summarized, state laws and local ordinances controlling fair labor practices, workers compensation, zoning, safe housing and rental property, nuisance, licensing, street vending, and solicitations by contractors may also apply to activities that involve illegal aliens. |  | |
