The border at Tijuana has seen a resurgence as an illegal crossing point into the U.S. with the creation by smugglers of at least 22 new routes.
According to a study by the office of State Civil Protection, along with the Beta Group, immigrant smugglers developed new ways to arrive in the U.S. that allow them to outmaneuver the Border Patrol.
The majority of routes are in areas that the smugglers no longer used, such as Otay Mesa, according to Arturo Aragon Cabello, an investigator with Civil Protection.
The new routes are located, he added, in the neighborhoods known as El Nido de las Aguilas, Las Torres, and the area known as Las Arboledas, near the Tecate city limits.
The study, which took place from January to October of 2004, uncovered other points where crossing is common: the border fence in the Frontera neighborhood in Otay Mesa, and also areas near the Tijuana airport and near the Canon del Matadero in Playas de Tijuana, he said.
They are diffent routes from the ones used in the past in these sectors of Tijuana, through which the smugglers seek to bring more undocumented persons into the U.S.
When Operation Gatekeeper went into effect in 1994 in San Diego, the immigrant flow was detained and the majority of immigrants and smugglers began to attempt the crossing through the mountains near Tecate.
Last year, however, observations have indicated that the smugglers are once again beginning to look toward the border at Tijuana because it has advantages that Tecate does not, he commented.
For example, he added, the crossing time by foot at the Tijuana is shorter, the possibilities that the migrants will die are less, and the proximity to the freeway on the U.S. side, which allows the smugglers to mobilize the indocumented persons more rapidly.
Our government sucks. It's going to take a terrorist creeping across the Mexican border for the U.S.(including Bush) to take this issue seriously.

This is one of the most heavily patrolled and technologically and materially (i.e., walls) reinforced areas of the border - and it has 72 smuggling routes running through it, including 22 new ones blazed in 2004. Operation Gatekeeper was a dog and pony show put on by Clinton to make sure it appear we had the border under control while the aliens ran amuck in the southern CA mountains and in Arizona. Now, the Bush Administration is not even maintaining the crown jewel that was designed to fool us all into complacency.

Well this 70 mile border is 90%+ fenced with two fences, flood lights, patrol roads, and the highest concentration of guards per mile in the nation.
Still several hundred thousand people jump the border here each year.
At some point the "fence is the answer" crowd is going to grow up and realized that you will never stop illegal crossers until you eliminate the demands or the supplies.
This is more of a coyote business advertisement than a news article. Changes in trails become evident within a couple of days. Somebody is just trying to drum up clientele.
If it's not the muzzies trying to take over our country, it's the illegals!

Border Patrol focuses on human smugglers 'drop houses'
As with the proverbial needle in the haystack, now comes finding the "coyotes" amid the undocumented immigrants along our southern border.
And thanks to work done in both El Paso and San Diego in years past, the area of searching is becoming tighter. Immigration officials in Arizona say they are focusing on leaders of the rings that make millions of dollars sneaking people across the border.
Agents say they will continue to raid "drop houses" where smugglers hide immigrants while they await payment and set up travel arrangements to send the illegal workers elsewhere.
That mid-1990s effort in El Paso, named "Operation Hold the Line," was overseen by Silvestre Reyes, then head of the Border Patrol in this sector. Its success helped Reyes launch a political career. He now serves as El Paso's representative in the U.S. House of Representatives.
But El Pasoans must remain vigilant in watching for these human drop houses. Once the migrants leave they are often put in danger, such as being locked in railroad cars or in tractor-trailer rigs. Many deaths have occurred over the years due to heat and not enough air or water.
In Phoenix, deputy special agent Patricia Schmidt said an effort is being made to tie the smugglers to individual drop houses.
By centering more on the smugglers, officials hope that it will be more difficult to sneak people into the country.
Karla Patricia Chavez is presently on trial in Houston for allegedly running a ring that tried to transport 70 immigrants in a hot, air-less tractor-trailer rig in 2003. Seventeen immigrants were found dead when the trailer was abandoned at a truck stop. Two others died later.
Finding illegal immigrants at drop houses not only will save lives, but will also help stop those who profit from the illegal actions.

If they will go after smugglers very hard, it would be a positive move. They need to add the employers who are placing their orders with the smugglers.
God bless you and all your efforts. It's nice to get some positive news on this issue for a change. I just can't figure out Bush's apparent lack of respect for the millions of people who oppose his amnesty/invitation program. He must read the same news that we do. Does he just stick his head in the sand? I don't get it. When will he realize the damage he has already caused?
