MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday hailed the emergence of strong military ties between Russia and its giant Asian neighbour China as he welcomed a top Chinese official to the Kremlin.
"Im happy to say that our plans to launch bilateral consultations in the security sphere are being implemented," Putin said at the start of talks with a member of the Chinese State Council, Tang Jiaxuan. "Our relations in the political, economic and security spheres and in the field of military cooperation have been developing intensively," the Russian president added.
He noted, "A quite large joint military exercise is set for this year." Russia and China are due to conduct their first ever-joint military exercises in August or September in what officials to better coordinate the fight against terrorism. In December, Russian officials said the exercises would be on Chinese territory and include the army, navy, air force units, and submarines.
Russia and China have had tense relations, with the two sides fighting two brief border wars in the 1950s.

......Russia now to have it's very own...massive... "Empiral Army"?
That day draws ever closer.
I wonder if he is also learning to speak Chinese...
Yup . . . sides are being picked and our historical, "supposed" allies are AWOL as has become their standard MO.
But some FReeper wrote something the other day that made mucho sense. She was asking anyone to give her a specific example of when Belgium, France, Spain, Germany, or any of the other "mainstream" European countries, except Great Britain, Italy, and now Poland, had come to OUR aid. She took care of the French argument about The Revolutionary War by saying they weren't coming so much to OUR aid as they were trying to add another irritant to the British when they were in fact at war with each other.
I couldn't come up with an example . . . we'd always been the ones coming to their aid so our "friendly" relationships appears to have always been a "One-Way" street. Which is okay . . . we know who we can count on when the time comes . . . and I agree with you -- They ARE coming!
