Senate Democrats gathered at the Franklin Roosevelt Memorial (search) today to invoke the image of FDR in calling on President Bush to remove private accounts from his Social Security (search) proposal. But it turns out that FDR himself planned to include private investment accounts in the Social Security program when he proposed it.

These people are crazy. Do they think anybody under 80 even remembers FDR, let alone reveres him?

Their whole argument is that we shouldn't touch SS because it will make the ghost of FDR mad. Craziness.

Yeah. Give 'em a chance, and they'll dream up another IRS. (They just can't wait.)

I wonder if the Democrats will ever quote this FDR passage:

"The lessons of history, confirmed by the evidence immediately before me, show conclusively that continued dependence upon relief induces a spiritual and moral disintegration fundamentally destructive to the national fiber. To dole out relief in this way is to administer a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit. It is inimical to the dictates of sound policy. It is in violation of the traditions of America. Work must be found for able-bodied but destitute workers. The federal government must and shall quit this business of relief."

The real argument for the Dems is "Don't fix SS. We need it for our campaign strategies every election cycle."

FDR never intended Social Security to be the SOLE means of sustaining citizens in their old age. It was intended as insurance to provide additional income support to citizens in addition to, not in place of, their own efforts to secure their retirement. There the Democrats go again in rewriting history.

The libs cannot stand on anything except their SOCIALIST HERITAGE -- which really was spawned functionally by FDR. They would build a church (I hear the laughing...) around him if they could.

I totally agree. Indeed, today's citizens have MORE information available for THEM to decide how to invest THEIR money. It's high time the gov't got their hands out of our pockets.

Symbolism over substance, and they cannot even get that right.

I watch these people go back to the same playbook that worked for them for the past 40+ years and much of it is outdated. Furthermore, when pressed with some problem/issue, they start throwing everything against a wall to see if anythings sticks.

Roosevelt was well aware of the corrosive effects of the dole. And liberalism has enlarged the extent and reach of social programs into Americans' lives on a scale far greater than FDR thought or felt desirable. And it isn't working.
