The house of Saud is firmly allied with the wahabists. May they get the Marie Antoinette cure, and soon.
Lots of candidates, as in Iraq. And, no, women are not voting, yet in SA.
And too bad for Saudi Arabia that they keep half of their brains (the woman half) locked up under a damned burka. However large their population is, it is only 50% effective.
I'd LOVE to see one of these mooks come to Beaumont and tell some Texas woman that she should put on the burka and bow down.
He'd last about 30 seconds. :)
A fissure opens.
Like the Soviet Union cracking, you cannot give people a little taste of liberty without awakening a ravenous thirst.
Pretty smart really.. After the election all the dumbest Iraqis that voted against him were ELIMINATED... or jailed and tortured to find any of their "friends"..
Joseph Stalin once said: "It's not who votes, but who counts the votes".. so true, consider Washington State in the U.S. the governors election.. and Wisconsin, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Mexifornia, Oregon and New Jersey..(there are others)
One thing is certain Democracy "IS" MOB RULE.... the most powerful MOB WINS.. ALWAYS... Islamic countries were always ruled by MOB RULE.. to this day.. MOBS are what Islamics do best.. and most of western civilization too..

Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide. John Adams (1814)
Democracy is the road to socialism. Karl Marx
Democracy is indispensable to socialism. The goal of socialism is communism. V.I. Lenin
The meaning of peace is the absence of opposition to socialism.- Karl Marx
But it's a major step in the right direction.
From another article:
"RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA - Phone text messages beep candidates' praise, and their pictures are splashed in newspaper ads and on billboards across Saudi Arabia's capital a surprising scene in a country where the depiction of the human face is considered un-Islamic and the idea of even talking about elections used to be considered taboo.
The country's first nationwide elections, beginning Thursday, are only for local councils, with voters electing half of the councils' members. The elections are part of the kingdom's measured response to calls for reforms.
There are forums where people can discuss social issues away from the control of religious authorities. Candidates' fliers are thrown into open car windows, and brochures are folded into newspapers. Tents have been erected along highways, featuring poets, lectures by experts in municipal services and sumptuous feasts.
One issue largely absent from candidates' pledges is the rights of women. The government has banned them from the polls, but officials have promised they will take part in the second round in 2009."

For some reason Bill Clinton come to mind.
Free elections Saudi-style means anyone is free to run so long as their surname is "Saud".
"... said the AP. "But the ballot is seen as a concrete step in a reform process no one had expected."
The Saudi's announced their intention to hold municipal elections, somewhere about a year ago. This may be a surprise to many but it certainly should NOT be unexpected to the AP. Try to keep up, AP flunkies!
Keep in mind that Saddam was routinely elected in a popular election......
Just another Saudi bamboozlin tactic to keep us amused.
The unheralded fruits of democracy.

I guess it depends on what you call "wife". Some women do it with Bill Clinton.
(:

I read about it a few months ago, but lost track when the elections would be.
Thanks for the ping.
If I was in charge, I would bring that subject to "public" discussion. Fair minded people can easily understand that in this life there should be reciprocation to good deeds. We allow the Saudis to proselytize in our country, as they forbid us the same. Obviously that is not fair, don't you think?

Unfortunately, I don't think women are being allowed to vote in this election.
