To most people, a Wisconsin quarter jingling in our pockets or purses is worth exactly 25 cents.
But to coin collectors, it could be worth $500.00 or so if there is an extra leaf-or a flaw that looks like a leaf-on the cornstalk pictured on the tail side of the quarter.
The two types of extra markings were noticed in Tuscon, Arizona in December. So far, coins have mostly been found in that area.
A few have also been reported around San Antonio, Texas. No one is sure if the markings were put on intentionally during a phase of production last fall or if a gouge or foreign object in the die caused the variation.
The leaf like markings appear only on coins minted in Denver, Colorado, and might have occurred after one of multiple die changes that take place as coins are being struck.
Rob Weiss, a Tuscon coin dealer went through an initial inventory of about 100 rolls of quarters and found about 5% of them with the two leaf-like markings. He reported the findings to the January edition of Coin World Magazine.
The news subseqently touched off a Wisconsin quarter hunt in the area. Rick Snow, of Eagle Eye Rare Coins started paying $50.00 for the quarters when he found them. Now individual coins with the markings are selling between $500 and $600, he said.

Looks like they're going for $80 to $120 on eBay. I don't see any evidence of the quarters selling for $500 to $600.
Checking my coin purse....
Some of them have both errors apparently, those may be the $500 ones..
ping for later
Hope you get lucky! And remember, my birthday is coming up soon..
I'm 0 for 5 so far.
Just saw my first one. No dice.
Great, because of this I just got a lecture about stealing from piggy to buy coffee.
*SIGH* It's so purdy, ain't it? ;)
I worked The Garden Expo this weekend, and I couldn't understand why I kept running out of quarters in the change drawer. Everyone and their brother was either scarfing up our quarters, or holding tightly onto theirs.
And you couldn't convince anyone that the mis-minted (?) quarters weren't even released in Wisconsin. Yeesh!
