Jesse Jackson Town Homes (Public Housing) May Be Torn Down
Fox 21 (Greenville, SC) ^ | Feb. 7, 2005

Over 800 hundred people living at the Jesse Jackson Town Homes in Greenville County may be displaced if a government grant goes through. The question is, "Is it too good to be true?"

Civil Rights Activist Jesse Jackson says, "Well until we see where the monies are, it's not true."

Tonight Jesse Jackson came to meet with residents not because the Town Homes bear his name. "I'm here because I grew up here .. . here because I have friends here."

The neighborhood may look idyllic with children out riding their bicycles but at night resident Dianna Turner says it's a different story. "This right here is not a bad place to live if it wasn't so much violence like drug activities... They're just ready to be torn down."

Her neighbor Marandia Jefferson agrees, "It's that bad, it gets that bad that I don't want section 8 - I'm ready to go."

The Greenville Housing Authority is preparing a grant application for HOPE VI revitalization. HOPE VI is a government grant program funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The program revitalizes distressed public housing units like the Jesse Jackson Town Homes which were built in 1952. HOPE VI coordinator Dale Johnson believes there is one clear outcome if the grant goes through.

He says, "The residents, the residents are the winners."

HOPE VI will demolish all 340 units and build 682 new units. 340 of those units will be public housing units. The rest will be affordable for sale units and affordable rentals which would use low income tax credit programs to finance them but Jackson is skeptical. He says, "Well there are no guarantees and that's why people here must be really concerned." ....

Who is more worthy to have a crime-riddled welfare community named after him but the race-baiting poverty pimp himself? Your tax dollars at work ...

Yes, JJ is a scumbag, supremo. Talk about racist hypocrisy who lives off of the ignorance victim-status American blacks. A true opportunistic low-life, so typical of the radical LEFT in this country. Hey, where is Al Sharpton?...thought he might come to the rescue of one of his own ilk....(chuckle)

Yeah. tear it down I say. The 'Housing' is causing all of this drug-dealing, gang banging and other assorted anti social behavior. Everything will be just fine if we tear these 'Bad' houses down and build more 'civilized' houses. /mega sarc off

They ought to do a survey of all the people living there the last 20 years and break it down to see:

How many left poverty to get a job and moved on?
How many went on to crime?
How many are still there and never progressed?

I wonder what the results would show?

I'd wager that things would be a lot better if we taxpayers didn't just hand people housing, and actually made them work and pay for it.

"It's that bad, it gets that bad that I don't want section 8 - I'm ready to go."

That's a somewhat encouraging statement on the part of a welfare recipient - an acknowledgement that she can seek a better life and make it on her own.

If given the choice of working or being in the street, I see work being tried most often.

"I'm here because I grew up here .. . here because I have friends here."

Just because I rake in millions by shaking down major corporations and live the life of luxury in Chicago, it doesn't mean I can't hang with my close personal friends in the SC projects.

Sure, Jesse.
