A controversial Islamic lobby group says it consulted with Fox television on the text of a disclaimer that accompanied an episode of the series "24," which breaks current entertainment-media convention by depicting terrorists as Muslims.
The Washington, D.C.-based Council on American-Islamic Relations which has seen three of its former employees indicted on federal terrorism charges sent representatives to meet Jan. 12 with network officials because it was concerned that the series' portrayal of a Muslims family as a terrorist "sleeper cell" may "cast a shadow of suspicion over ordinary American Muslims and could increase Islamophobic stereotyping and bias."
Kiefer Sutherland, who stars as counterterrorist agent Jack Bauer, read the disclaimer Monday night. [View via http://www.cair-net.org/video/disclaimer-hi.ram>dial-up or broadband.]
"Hi. My name is Kiefer Sutherland. And I play counter-terrorist agent Jack Bauer on Fox's 24. I would like to take a moment to talk to you about something that I think is very important. Now while terrorism is obviously one of the most critical challenges facing our nation and the world, it is important to recognize that the American Muslim community stands firmly beside their fellow Americans in denouncing and resisting all forms of terrorism. So in watching 24, please, bear that in mind."
Last month, Fox spokesman Scott Grogin told WND that as a result of the January meeting, the network agreed to distribute a CAIR-produced public service announcement to affiliates.
But contrary to CAIR's statement at the time, he insisted Fox would make no request as to when, "or even if," it is to air.
Grogin also refused to comment on CAIR's claim that network officials assured the Muslim group they had already removed some aspects of existing episodes "that could potentially be viewed as stereotypical."
CAIR Communications Coordinator Rabiah Ahmed said the group appreciates "Fox's willingness to address Muslim concerns and to tell viewers that American Muslims repudiate terror."
The Fox show, which has a story line that runs the entire season, is based on 24 hours at a counter-terrorism unit. In its fourth season, this year's story centers on a terrorist sleeper cell planning an attack on the United States.
CAIR is a spin-off of the Islamic Association For Palestine, a group identified by two former FBI counter-terrorism chiefs as a U.S. front group for the terrorist group Hamas.
Since 9-11, CAIR has seen three of its former employees indicted on federal terrorism charges.
Randall Todd "Ismail" Royer was sentenced to 20 years in prison on charges he trained in Virginia for holy war against the United States and sent several members to Pakistan to join Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Kashmiri terrorist group with reported ties to al-Qaida. Bassem Khafagi, was arrested in January 2003 while serving as the group's director of community relations. The previous December, Ghassan Elashi, the founder of CAIR's Texas chapter, was indicted for financial ties to Hamas leader Musa Abu Marzook.
Current CAIR leaders also have made statements in support of Hamas and the domination of the U.S. by Islam.
As WorldNetDaily reported, CAIR's chairman of the board, Omar Ahmad, was cited by a California newspaper in 1998 declaring the Quran should be America's highest authority.
He also was reported to have said Islam is not in America to be equal to any other religion but to be dominant.
Watch out for the late plot twist where the bad guys turn out to be white supremacists, just pretending to be muslims...
Well not all muslims are terrorists/it just seems that way because so very few denounce terrorism.
Note to Fox - don't give in to CAIR - they are nothing more than a front for terrorists money. If CAIR thinks they can sell the notion that "American Muslims" condemn terrorism -- I have a bridge to sell them. Hey CAIR, we're not as dumb as you think we are.
I think that is coming - recent episodes are hinting at something of the sort. 24 sucked me and others in by pretending to be a rare show that might actually reflect the reality of the world we live in. But I should have known it wouldn't last...
Funny how we never get a disclaimer regarding Christians in the countless TV shows and movies that bash the group.
I'd rather it not be there but it's nothing to get all bent out of shape over.
I like 24, when I seen the disclaimer I was yelling at the TV and Sutherland to STFU! :D I do like the show, and will keep watching it, i'm glad they caught the mole girl, she was annoying me!
I have it figured as big business, military industrial complex & all that jazz. The Muslim kid is going to come out as the saviour.
Imagine going to church on Sunday knowing that someone unknown to you (1 of 100 attendees) will have no qualms with killing you if you denounce his religious views. Imagine that another 5 out of the 100 are sympathetic to his views and are willing to tell him if you do denounce his views. I doubt you'd be very vocal denouncing his beliefs on terrorism or any other subject.
That being said, CAIR is a terrorist front group and should be shut down ASAP.
As for 24, each season the show demonstrates that those motivated by greed and power can manipulate true believers in a cause. Some true believers in a cause are extremists and can be duped into committing acts of violence that further the unrelated personal agendas of those who encourage them to act.
where does all the 24 love around here come from?
every season thus far it ends up that the american military-industrial complex is the prime mover behind the terrorist threat
after this season's second episode, the 2nd-generation commie sutherland laughed about the show's popularity with conservatives and said 'it's not what you think', 'wait til the end', 'they'll be surprised' or something
there's been no reference to 'allah' or islam on the part of the terrorists, either for CAIR to be offended by or for bigots around here to cheer
'the mole' is played by ayisha tyler (sp?), a real life conservative (or at least libertarian, like every other hollywood WoT supporter who crapped out 2 years into our iraq efforts and began to deny their support) and the american terrorist is recognized from a heritage foundation function
whatever action can be applauded in 24 is spoiled by the amount of soap opera that increasingly dominates each episode as the season wears on (please kill off that tony guy once and for all)
i give 24 a chance every season (lord knows why) but i bet i won't see the last 3 episodes of this one either
bingo, reaching up into the defense department.
mid-season, the terrorists change from poor deluded muslims to their evil puppetmasters who always turn out to be white males.
What I've seen of 24 it seems well written. What I find utterly distasteful is their surrender to the enemy that
has snuck in while we were distracted coming to us in sheeps clothing but beware CAIR is as ravening wolves seeking whomever they can devour. The only consult I would give CAIR would be to inquire if they had booked their flight back home to Dar al Islam.
I wish Rupert would have put out a disclaimer for that new Seth MacFarlin piece of filth call 'American Dad'. god it is so Left wing to be laughable, considering that Rupert is a Conservative.....and the latest Simpsons was another example of religious intolerance of Christians for its healthy shot at "The Passion of the Christ".
