Mohawk-Wearing Idaho Teen Survives Scalping; Fellow Member of Punk Clique Suspected in Attack
Published: Feb 9, 2005 BOISE, Idaho (AP) - A member of a punk clique scalped another member apparently as punishment for her disrespectful behavior toward women, police said. The victim, a 16-year-old girl whose hair was cut in a mohawk, survived.
Authorities are searching for Marianne Dahle, 26, who allegedly tied the teen up and used a 4-inch knife to cut away the crown and back portion of her scalp. A felony arrest warrant accuses Dahle of aggravated battery, which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years.
Dahle was visiting Kirkham Hot Springs in central Idaho with the girl and a friend when the attack occurred Jan. 18. The teen spent two weeks in the hospital and is now recovering at home.
Authorities did not release the girl's name, though she identified herself as Sheila to Boise TV station KTVB.
"When I say this gal was scalped, she was truly scalped," said Bill Braddock, chief deputy of Boise County. "The top of her head, her hair, was completely cut off. The motive, as near as we've been told by witnesses, was retaliation for acting in a way that the adult perceived as being offensive to women as a gender."
Braddock said the victim, Dahle and another teenage girl who witnessed the attack were long-term acquaintances who belonged to the same clique. The victim's mohawk hair cut may have played a role in the assault, he said.
"In their punk group, wearing a mohawk is a sign of being a punker, and according to their creed if you disrespect women you are not allowed to wear a mohawk," he said. "But I don't think the victim had any idea in the world she was going to be scalped."
Sheila, who is from Nampa, near Boise, told KTVB that she thought the woman was going to cut her hair.
"Why would they do something like this to me?" Sheila asked. "I thought they were my friends."
Doctors grafted skin from Sheila's thigh to cover the inches-long circular patch of missing skin on her crown. She has one operation left. She wears hats to hide the healing patch of skin.
The group is not a gang, Braddock said, though they had at least some established rules of behavior.
"It was an act of revenge. I view this as a case where an adult female is using predatory control - both psychological and sexual - toward juvenile victims. There are definitely sexual overtones to this crime," Braddock said.
No drugs or alcohol were involved in the attack, Braddock said.
Police were alerted after Dahle allegedly dropped the teen off at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Boise, Braddock said. Sheila said her face and body were covered with blood when Dahle left her at the hospital.
Authorities recovered the scalp, which had been left behind at the hot springs, but doctors were unable to reattach it, Braddock said.
The Kirkham Hot Springs, about 70 miles northeast of Boise, are popular with campers and hikers, but visitors during midweek in the winter can count on near total seclusion, Braddock said.
The case has been difficult to investigate because it has taken deputies time to win the trust of witnesses and friends of the victim. Some witnesses are afraid of retaliation.
"Everybody in this case is very fragile and they're worried about how they're going to be judged by their peers," Braddock said. "I have to be very protective of my victim and others who are cooperating."
Braddock said he only agreed to discuss the incident so the public could help authorities find Dahle. Police would not release many details for fear it would harm the prosecution's case.

Alleged Scalper's Brother-In-Law Tells Of Woman's Battle With Drugs

It's been a surreal month for Robert Brown and his family. "I feel like I'm in a movie rather than real life," said Brown. According to police, his sister-in-law, Marianne Dahle, scalped the teenage girl. Her scalp was found at the hot springs but doctors were not able to reattach it.
Brown said his family's nightmare started more than a year ago. "I've seen Marianne get angry but I've never seen her do anything that serious," he said. But her alleged abnormal behavior was serious enough for the Browns to get a no contact order against her. "She started to get aggressive and violent," said Brown.
The family told Local 2 News Dahle is bipolar and they've been trying to get her judicially committed to a mental hospital for months, but they claim authorities told them they couldn't until she committed a crime.
In the meantime, Brown said he and his wife were given custody of Dahle's three-year-old son - fearing for his safety. "Simply because she was so heavily involved in drugs," he said.
According to Boise County authorities those fears may have been well founded because police said the scalping incident involved two 16-year-old girls who came to the hot springs with Dahle to party - but got more than they bargained for. "What we're dealing with here is a predatory adult that seeks out young females and exerts control over them... physical control, psychological control and sexual control," said Boise County Chief Deputy Sheriff Bill Braddock.
"She's always been one that hangs with younger people, not wanting to admit she's grown up herself," said Brown, "but then again, those who do drugs have been her main association."
Court records indicate that earlier this month a Canyon County Magistrate Judge ordered Dahle to undergo to a psychological examination - but it never happened because after allegedly scalping the victim and dropping her off at a Boise hospital, Dahle disappeared... leaving Brown concerned for his family's safety. "I'm worried about what she might do," said Brown, "and as it is right now, Marianne is even a danger to herself."
A felony warrant has been issued for Dahle, who police believe is driving a 1995 4-door white, Mercury Tracer with license plate number: 2C W0072. According to Brown there are two distinct bumper stickers on the back of her car. One reads: "I Blame My Parents." The other reads: "I Scare My Family."
If you have any information on Dahle's whereabouts, call local police or Crime Stoppers at 343-COPS.
Police call scalping suspect 'child predator't Crime: Investigators find possible links between gruesome attack and social rules of 'punker' group
By Tammie Knauff - Idaho Press-Tribune
NAMPA -- Police said a 26-year-old woman suspected of removing part of a Nampa girl's scalp preys on child victims, was still at large Tuesday night and remains a threat to others.
Officers believe she is in the Caldwell area and is hiding out with friends.
Investigators released new information about the suspect accused of assaulting the 16-year-old and extensive details depicting the violent attack at Kirkham Hot Springs on Jan. 18.
Chief Boise County Deputy Bill Braddock said the suspect, Marianne Dahle, is considered "a sexual and psychological predator adult who is looking for child victims."

Dahle has a criminal record in Idaho and Washington.
The victim concealed her identity from police during her first hours of treatment.
Officials said the suspect is believed to use physical coercion in manipulating juveniles.
I'm behind the times, I though this crowd wore a Mullett, not a Mohawk.
Did she study her scalping techniques under Ward-Churchill?
Their worry about "judgment by their peers" seems well justified. Will this be covered in the queer-studies class at the local university?
"Once again we get a glimpse of how far gone many American youth are , those not honorably serving in the Armed Forces.
"
OK, now, wait a minute. One person does something in Boise, and you're ready to condemn everyone? Bizarre!

Too weird for words.

And a big "Thank you" to the ACLU.

Scalping suspect turns herself in to police
February 9, 2005 9:35 AM
The Associated Press
BOISE, Idaho A woman suspected of scalping a teenage girl surrendered herself to authorities.
Marianne Dahle turned herself in this morning to deputies at the Ada County Jail.
She was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery for allegedly tying up the 16-year-old acquaintance and cutting away a six-inch by eight-inch section of her scalp.
The victim has only released her first name, Sheila, to news outlets. She says she underwent skin grafts and anticipated another surgery to repair the damage.
This argument would be more effective for a state that wasn't overwhelmingly dominated by the "conservative" Republicans and the "family values" Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
I mean, Boise is the city where the network affiliate wouldn't even air the Victoria's Secret fashion show and a bunch of people had a hissy fit about Hooter's wanting to build a restaurant there because it would scar fragile little minds.
