Hatch's 'Foreign-Born President' Amendment
GOPUSA ^ | 2-9-05 | Paul M. Weyrich

Our Constitution has stood the test of time. It has served our country well, guiding it through times of war, peace, prosperity and depression. As a conservative I do not want it changed without good reason. One worthy reason is protecting marriage as a covenant between a man and a woman, a definition in consonance with Christian tradition that has proven itself sufficient for centuries.

Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) has proposed to amend the Constitution to allow naturalized Americans to become president. If his amendment were adopted any person who had been a United States citizen for at least twenty years would be eligible to hold the presidency. This is not a new idea. However, Senator Hatch's proposed amendment places emphasis on contemporary political leaders who otherwise never would be eligible to become president.

Perhaps no better person could refute the proposed Hatch Amendment than the late Balint Vazsyoni, Director of the Center for the American Founding. I had the honor of knowing this gentleman, a concert pianist who came to our country from his native Hungary while it was under Communist rule. More than most, Vazsyoni appreciated the wisdom that was displayed by the Founding Fathers in framing the Constitution and our country's unique heritage of offering freedom and liberty to all people. Vazsyoni witnessed for himself and knew of the damage done to countries whose guiding principles were set -- often arbitrarily -- by despotism and the ideologies of fascism and Communism.

A hearing by the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on the Constitution was held on July 24, 2000 to review amending the Constitution to allow foreign-born citizens to become President. Vazsyoni both testified in person before the subcommittee and submitted prepared remarks.

This idiot has to be one of the Biggest Anti-Americans I have ever had the distaste to hear. First his statement about blowing up peoples Computers that download files, and his numerous Illegal-Alien pandering. Now he wants to change the Constitution to allow Foreign born to be President.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. If one actually knew how many amendments are submitted every year it would be a shock. It will die in committee like 99.99% of all the other amendments submitted every year.

Do we want to risk ever having to utter the words "President George Soros"?

This is always the first thought that comes to my mind when this topic comes up.

In pre-Napoleonic Poland, their king was elected by Electors, nobles with a title, and they could pick anyone from inside or outside their country.

Eventually, the monarchy of Poland became a prize for which Saxony, Austria, Prussia and Russia all competed for a century.

Finally they decided to have peace among themselves and just split Poland up together.

The USA does not need the Chicoms sponsoring an eternal candidate for President in competition with the EU sponsoring someone else at every election.

We dont need to compound partisan politics with permanent political cliques that represent the interests of foreign nations they were born in.

How does "President Soros" sound to you?

How about "President Granholm"...?

Both are a heck of a lot more likely than "President Ahnold".

I can see it now: Bin Laden for President! No? How about Kofi Annan? Still undecided? Try Peter Jennings!

Hatch is rapidly becoming the top senate flake on the GOP side. Might be his tie pin is cinched too tight.

I strongly disagree with Hatch on this.

The whole concept it flawed. Lets assume, for a moment, that Schwarzenegger was a true conservative. Pretend he's the caliber of Ronald Reagan. It would still be a bad idea to amend the Constitution of the United States of America to accommodate one politician.

The article wisely reminds us that there is ample opportunity for foreign-born citizens to participate in our government. That this one office is restricted to a US-born citizen is not an unreasonable requirement.

I'm not sure why Hatch is so enamored with Schwarzenegger, presuming he's the reason for this attempt. Please don't mess with the COTUS for the sake of a groping RINO celebrity.

I am opposed to the Hatch Amendment! Constitution has been right on this for over 200 years and no reason to change it now IMHO!

Sometimes I wonder about Sen Hatch and this is one of those!
