Terror alarm to be tested in Oslo

A noiseless terror alarm will be tested in an Oslo subway station. The surveillance system will be able to detect chemical agents and radioactive radiation released by terrorists.

Alarm systems such as this in crowded areas is one of several measures considered by the authorities, says director Finn Moerch Andersen of the Directorate for National Security to NRK.

He adds that such an alarm will function only in addition to other measures.

The Al Qaida has twice over the past few years encouraged followers to attack Norwegian interests. Last year the Security Service of the Norwegian police increased the national threat level from low to moderate.

In case any Free Republicans were not aware of this, Norway has been one of our most steadfast allies in the War against Terror, putting both their money and their men where their mouth is.

For this reason, the terrorists have "targeted" Norway.

"Ping" for the Norway ping list.

I have to add that I had to "correct" the article as it originally appears on the newspaper web-site--the spelling. Apparently this lesser newspaper in Norway lacks as competent, as splendid, as excellent, a translator as the now-famous Jonathan Tisdall of the Aftenposten.

Well, you know, sir, that's an interesting idea, a "silent" alarm--of course such things have existed for years and decades, but I never heard of a "silent" alarm being used in this sort of case.

More usually, there is a loud alarm among hordes and crowds of people, causing panic and hysteria. When the IRA bombed a London underground system in early 1978, I was right there and saw it, although from aboveground and not down in it.

It is a frightening sight, the panic.
