How could anyone get that excited abou IKEA?

Easily...in a negative way of course!
My husband and I went to IKEA once, in Elizabeth NJ, looking for bunk beds I think. What a nightmare maze of a place that is. After walking literally half a mile across an unbelievably enormous parking lot, we were forced to wind around and around the nearly windowless store, following arrows on the floor with no hope of exiting without seeing every single bit of furniture in the place. By the time we made it through, our two small children were so wound up that we let them expend some frustration in the ball pit - the best part of the afternoon was spent mercifully resting by the kids' play area. A good thing, as we needed the energy for the trek back to the car.
