Most likely he knew what Berger was up to and avoided mentioning the document
Ah, that's where I heard that line before, in the eulogy for "Chuckles the Clown" on the old Mary Tyler Moore Show. I'd forgotten all about that, though I know the couplet more recently from a song by a favorite band.
Anybody know if it goes back farther? I.e. did the Mary Tyler Moore writer make it up, or get it from somewhere else?
