Russia: Foreign Minister Sees Worldwide Campaign To Restore Cold War Climate

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has denounced what he says are attempts to return his country to the Cold War era by criticizing its policies and exaggerating differences between Moscow and the West. RFE/RL takes a closer look at Lavrov’s comments, which appeared in yesterday's edition of one of Russia’s leading dailies.

Prague, 11 February 2005 (RFE/RL) -- In unusually harsh comments, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov lashed out yesterday at what he alleges is a worldwide campaign to "restore the atmosphere of the Cold War" by driving a wedge between Moscow and the West.

Of particular concern to Lavrov are purported attempts, in the United States and European media, at portraying Russia as an "enemy" of the West.

"Of course, that Russia has had -- and continues to have -- ill-wishers is not new to us," Lavrov wrote in a commentary published in the Moscow-based daily "Izvestiya."

"What surprises us, however, is that unlike its predecessors of the Cold War era, the current anti-Russian campaign is taking place...against the background of a dynamically developing partnership with the United States, the European Union, and NATO on a very broad range of issues," he added.

Among successful areas of cooperation between Russia and the West, Lavrov singles out the global war on terrorism.

Arguing that the terrorist threat has forced the administration of U.S. President George W. Bush itself to "take very harsh legislative and administrative measures against both U.S. and foreign nationals," the Russian minister objects to Western claims that civic liberties in his country are increasingly restricted.

Yes, some ugly conspirators want to isolate Russia and steal their happiness...
This trick is used by propaganda in every totalitarian country.

OK, they can start showing their benevolence by taking back the advanced Kilo hulls they sold to China (or sink the boats using the Spetsnaz forces), cancel all further shipments of said, and can any potential Iskander-E sales to Syria, alsong with any shoulder-fired AAA. It wasn't nice that one of their "export" companies was shipping NVG into Iraq before and after the commencment of OIF.

Good deeds Russia.. do some! Their help in the WOT is appreciated. Just no proxy strategies..

I say wait until the French criticize Russia and then take Russia' side. Unfortunately, I'll probably be dead before that happens.
