Organize for Thursday, February 17!
The National Executive Committee of the NLG calls on all Guild chapters to organize and to take part in local actions as part of a "National Day of Outrage" in response to yesterday's Lynne Stewart verdict, which we see as an attack not only on our cherished colleague and fellow NLG member but also on all members of the legal community who represent unpopular clients and causes. We are calling for this coordinated day of action to be held next Thursday, February 17 in your cities, towns, and, if you are a law student, at your school. We are putting together a list of suggested actions to take and will send this out ASAP. Please begin making arrangements and stay tuned for more information.
This will be just one step in our ongoing support for Lynne Stewart and in defense of all of those who take on controversial cases.
Only a day? I'm outraged at liberals all year long.

I work for lawyers and I can guarantee you that nobody in our firm will have the time to bother with this.

She wasn't convicted of having unpopular clients...she was convicted of aiding and abetting terrorists by passing along their inf. to other aleged terrorists. 60 years ago she would have been hung for treason.
I shall be celebrating the guilty verdict with even more glee on February 17th. May she get the maximum time in the slammer. Better to get the garbage off the streets.

I'd support a "day of outrage" against the entire legal profession. Every product we buy and service we use costs a lot more because of the vampire class.

Lynne Stewart has a very long history of being involved
with "hate America" groups and causes. The interesting
thing about the NLG is they don't even plead for an appeal
-- just "outrage" over the verdict. She was duly found
guilty by a jury of her peers -- I suppose these "lawyers"
really want to abolish the 6th Amendment.
Reminds me of my childhood about 50+ years ago when the commie lawyers would rant about this and that. We knew what they were but they were never prosecuted for the traitors that they were. Now, at least, somebody has begun to recognize the danger they pose and fat girl is off to jail.
Checking out the web site reminds one of all the rent-a-mob types found at the various marches. Same people.

Where else does the Bush administration ask the people to live except in fear? On what other grounds does it justify its destruction of the nation’s civil liberties? Why else does the FBI search large scale street demonstrations for “anarchists” and “extremist elements,” place under surveillance citizens known to have read the works of Leon Trotsky or the Rubbiyat of Omar Khayyam?
Ever since the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington, no week has passed in which the government has failed to issue warnings of a sequel. Sometimes it’s the director of the FBI, sometimes the attorney general or an unnamed source in the CIA or the Department of Homeland Security, but always it’s the same message—suspect your neighbor and watch the sky, buy duct tape, avoid the Washington Monument, hide the children. Let too many freedoms wander around loose in the streets, and who knows when somebody will turn up with a bread knife or a bomb? Let too many citizens begin to ask impertinent questions about the shambles of the federal budget or the ill-conceived occupation of Iraq, and the government sends another law-enforcement officer to a microphone with another story about a missing nuclear bomb or a newly discovered nerve gas, another Arab seen driving a suspicious truck north to New Jersey or west to Oklahoma.
Notwithstanding its habitual incompetence, the government doesn’t lightly relinquish the spoils of power seized under the pretexts of apocalypse. What the government grasps, the government seeks to keep and hold, and the National Lawyers Guild performs a necessary service by publishing its report on the American government’s attempt to preserve the American democracy by destroying it. The deal is as shabby as the one offered to the luckless villagers of Vietnam. For the sake of a vindictive policeman’s dream of a tranquil suburb, the country stands to lose the constitutional right to its own name. -Lewis Lapham
