I find it strange that "Some lost their health insurance". Wouldn't COBRA give them 18 months coverage, unless they had been short term temps?

COBRA isn't free, so I guess they didn't feel like using their "savings" to pay for it.

Yeah, but then they'd have to write the check for it every month instead of the employer dealing with it.
