Democratic governor endorses Capitol display of Ten Commandments
American Family Association of Michigan | Feb. 12, 2005 | AFA-Michigan

LANSING -- Prompted by comments this weekend by Gov. Jennifer Granholm, a Michigan family values organization Saturday said it has invited a national veterans group to bring former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore's Ten Commandments monument to Lansing and will seek the Democratic governor's official sponsorship of a temporary display of the monument in the state Capitol rotunda.

Granholm, in comments broadcast by a Lansing public affairs television show, "endorsed Friday the display of the Ten Commandments in government buildings, including the state Capitol," the Detroit Free Press reported Saturday. http://www.freep.com/news/mich/granholm12e_20050212.htm

The Free Press reported that during an interview with veteran Capitol correspondent Tim Skubick's for airing on "Off the Record" -- a public affairs program broadcast by WKAR, Lansing -- "Granholm said she has no objection to display of the commandments in public buildings 'because the Ten Commandments are universal' (and) reflect a 'universal desire for people to behave with dignity and honor God.' She said she would have no problem with the installation of a Ten Commandments display in the rotunda at the state Capitol." http://wkar.org/offtherecord

In a statement faxed to the governor's office Saturday, the American Family Association of Michigan thanked Granholm for her support of such a display and said upon learning of her comments, "we took immediate action to bring a prominent display of the Ten Commandments to our state Capitol as soon as possible."

AFA-Michigan President Gary Glenn, Midland, pointed to a Detroit News poll published earlier this week, which found that 75 percent of Michiganders think it proper to display the Ten Commandments in government buildings. http://www.detnews.com/specialreports/2005/values/polls/71.htm

"Governor Granholm's public support for displaying the Ten Commandments in our Capitol rotunda is certainly a welcome stand, whether it's a statement of personal principle, a political acknowledgement of how overwhelmingly Michigan families support such displays, or both," Glenn said. "If it is a statement of personal principle in which she truly believes, we urge the governor to provide reliable leadership on the issue and not back down now to pressure from anti-religion activists and ACLU lawyers who may have supported her politically."

Glenn said Granholm's statements "couldn't have been more timely," with the United States Supreme Court scheduled March 2nd to hear oral arguments in a case that will decide whether public buildings may constitutionally display the Ten Commandments.

Glenn said a prominent display of the Ten Commandments in Michigan's state Capitol, with the support and approval of a nationally-known Democratic governor, would send a strong message to the court "that the Ten Commandments not only contain universal truths but enjoy near-universal support from people of diverse political and religious affiliations."

He outlined four steps AFA-Michigan is taking to encourage public display of the Ten Commandments in the state Capitol rotunda:

* Saturday, he contacted American Veterans in Domestic Defense and urged them as soon as possible to bring to Lansing the Ten Commandments monument first displayed by former Chief Justice Moore in the rotunda of the Alabama Supreme Court building. Glenn also said Dennis Pape of Menominee, a personal friend of Moore, plans to call the judge Saturday to ask his help in scheduling the monument in Lansing and to urge that Moore make an appearance in Lansing in conjunction with the display.

The veterans groups over the past two years has conducted a nationwide tour in which it has displayed the monument in private settings, through January 31st, at 117 locations in 17 states. The monument this month is being displayed in Florida, North Carolina, and Maryland, and is then scheduled March 2nd to be on display outside the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C., during the court's hearing on the issue.

* AFA-Michigan offered to organize a diverse, broad-based non-profit foundation to raise money for a permanent display of the Ten Commandments in the rotunda of the state Capitol in Lansing. Glenn invited Gov. Granholm to serve as active or honorary chairperson of the foundation.

* AFA-Michigan also offered to donate -- at no expense to taxpayers -- framed copies of the Ten Commandments for display in the governor's office and all other state Capitol offices.

* AFA-Michigan also urged Gov. Granholm to ask Attorney General Mike Cox to file a "friend of the court" brief in the case currently before the U.S. Supreme Court, putting Michigan officially on record in support of allowing displays of the Ten Commandments in public buildings.

This is the woman who said that any potential DNC chair needed to "speak the language of values."

OBITUARY Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend by the name of Common Sense who has been with us for many years.

No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such value lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm and that life isn't always fair.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies adults, not kids, are in charge).

His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

It declined even further, when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student; but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Finally, Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims did.

Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, she spilled a bit in her lap, and was awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by two stepbrothers; My Rights and Ima Whiner. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

If you still know him pass this on, if not join the majority and do nothing.

In Michigan, President Bush won in 66 of 81 counties. The vote totals in 80 counties had Bush ahead of Kerry by ~170,000 votes (iirc). However, a 300,000 vote margin for Kerry in Wayne County (Detroit) put Michigan into the blue state category. In contrast, Michigan's referendum on the sanctity of marriage passed by a wide margin, to include in Wayne County. The Detroit/Wayne County vote overwhelmingly comes from reliably democratic black voters, but they are also strong on Christian values. While the Ann Arbor democrats will be outraged, putting the Ten Commandments in the capital will go over well both in the black churches in Detroit and with most of the rest of the state. Smart move by Granholm.

This is SOOO obviously a "sister Souljah" ploy by Granholm. Sure, she'll publicly endorse the display, while at the same time privately encouraging her ACLU buddies to sue to censor the display.

Just saw that Granholm has pulled the predicted switcheroo on this issue.
