There is a very valid reason for taking it to the Grand Jury, and that's to protect Ms Brady legally. Given the facts as we currently know them (and note that I am not stating the facts are otherwise), a verdict of Justifiable Homicide, Self Defense is pretty much a given. This would preclude any relative of the dead woman from launching a vindictive wrongful death civil suit, which would be even worse for her...
