If you live anywhere near Maryland, you would have been hard-pressed to miss the whispering campaign about Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley and the state of his marriage. The slander against Mr. O'Malley and his family became such a big story last week that it relegated a more significant news item that Mr. O'Malley, the mayor of one of America's largest cities, believes that President Bush's budget is analogous to the behavior of Mohammed Atta and his confederates to the inside pages. All of the innuendo about the mayor burst into the open last week, as The Washington Post published a front-page story reporting that Joseph Steffen, a Republican who was an aide to Gov. Robert Ehrlich, had been involved in spreading false rumors about Mr. O'Malley's marriage on the Internet.
